Hello, I have traveled with 16K flew in meet seller at airport, paid him and drove back home. I was nervous about doing that, when I landed I went to the mens room and stashed some money in my left sox some in my right sox and the rest in my pants lol.
Now I am considering buying a 02 Z06 from a guy in the Miami area. I would be having it shipped back to Chicago. My intention is to do this deal without seeing the car myself. I have contacted a forum member in the area who will be taking a look at the car for me and I may have a mechanic also take a look.
So any suggestions on how to pay the guy. So many sellers want cash.
Im not sure on exactly how to go about this but what I will advise you is b4 you send any $, investigate the $hit out of him. His identity, drivers license #, SS# if u can, all the obvious-address, occupation, phone #s, email, confirmed bank accounts, name searches, references etc...Protect urself 1st and all the way...If u have another forum member who has absolutely no interest in the deal, def take advantage of that...

You can fly Chicago to Miami RT cheap.
Go there make the deal. Go to the bank give the guy the $ and get the title then have the car shipped.
Sure have the forum member check it out to make sure it's worth the trip but do not buy sight unseen.

try starting a new thread n c what u come up with sure there are plenty out there with some helpful solutions...+ this might be considered "hyjacking"...
Whatever you do, don't fall for the stupid, "Oh the car is in a shipping container ready to ship to you if you are interested. Just give me the payment."
or the famous, "Yeah, this is my buddy's car, he's going to Afghanistan to fight for his country so he asked me to sell it."
Amazing what scammers come up with these days.
When I got mine, I Carfax'd it, brought a certified check in the owner's name, met the actual owner of the car, test drove the car twice, made sure he had a title in hand. No wire transfer scammer BS for me.
I said I was naive about the form of payment...NOT the whole buying experience.
I always close the deal at the bank... Usually I bring the seller to my bank when I get the check, then we go to theirs to deposit it and sign the title over, takes a bit of time, but makes both parties feel better, and gives me some extra time to get a feel for the previous owner of the car... Plus that way the whole transaction is on camera as well! Can never be too careful!
That's all fine and well as long as "the car" shows up in my home town but, that's not happening here lately. Most of interest are many miles away.
Just take enough cash with you on the initial visit to put a deposit down should you strike a deal to buy the car - say $500 or so.
Then once you get everything in order, take a cashiers check or have your bank wire transfer the money to the seller's bank.
Bingo, my exact thought!!!!
But for me the seller was so nervous i sent him a copy of the cashiers check while waiting for him to get the the lein cleared he called 3 branches of my bank in the area to verify it was good and in the end he wanted me to bring cashso back to the bank to get the cash (the bank told me that he call the branches)

That is exactly what i did last year when i bought my coupe. I took $1K in cash with me,gave the buyer $500 deposit, and came back the next morning with a cashiers check from my bank for the balance.
The guy who bought my SRT8 paid cash. I thought he was crazy, but he met me at the bank and it all worked out. I also know a guy who bought a ZR1 with cash. I believe it was over $100K and he flew on a plane with the cash on him. I would never do that without a body guard!
Before I got into Corvettes, I was a Porsche Carrera 3.2 guy for many years. Purchased a car from a guy in Valejo up in Northern Cal I live in Southern Cal. Checked out the car agreed on a price point and had the money wired in to his account. Everyone felt safe and secure in the transaction. Just watch your back brother lots of scammers out there. Take a friend and never ever carry that much cash. Just my 2 cents.
Looked at the car, my offer was accepted and we went to a Wells Fargo in his town to get a Cashiers Check.
Sellers should have no problem when they get a cashiers check from a bank.
bring a couple of hundred dollars for a deposit, (good faith), then get a bank check or arrange a wire transfer into the seller's designated bank account. the seller should have no problem with either.
Just be advised, a cashiers check can be canceled. It is not a done deal! When I bought my car I was as worried about the dude that sold it to me as he was about me. He had me write on our sales agreement that I promised not to cancel the cashiers check. That got me wondering about him!
Also, if you are going to need a lot of cash and have time, call the bank up and tell them. They don't usually have $20k in $100 on a Saturday. That kind of cash will have to ordered by the bank to be delivered by Brinks, or whoever. Call 'em up two or 3 days prior for a hassle, maybe, free experience.
When I sold my Miata we had no problem at a BofA for under $10k, but more than that for the Vette would pose a problem.
That's just my experience and research of the local banks I deal with. YMMV. Good luck

My advice is to meet at your bank and have them confirm that the funds are legit. That's what I did when I sold my last car. I didn't want to screw around since there was $26K on the line.

I'd say cashiers check also. I flew from Mississippi to Ohio to pick up my Vette using a cashiers check, pretty smooth transaction. Me and the guy must have communicated for a couple of weeks, had phone numbers of each other, and residence addy's, so it went fine.
