Default rear end collison

don't know where to start, but took out the vette for a quick spin with my wife and not 5mins out a young woman driving a mitsubishi lancer (on her cell phone) ran into the back of my vette at a yield sign, as i was turning right onto a highway. the impact moved the vette about a foot forward. worse part is she took off. as we pulled over to a safe section of the highway to exchange info, she just kept going and we could not find her! man was i mad! i have only owned this car for less than two months and it's our sunny day weekend ride. good thing is, the damage does not seem to be too bad. see the pic below. what do you guys think? felt like it destroyed that back end, but when i took alook all i see is the paint damage and some fiberglass crazing. what is behind this rear end facia? i am worried that there is something behind the panel that is also damaged.

this sucks, julian

There's nothing worth worrying about behind there.

There is a big black styrofoam type shock absorbing beam that runs the full width of the car between the exterior bumper and the frame crossmember. If your bumper is mostly okay, that part is probably good, too. It did its job.

Last year,in my Silverado, I was hit by a 17 yr old girl while turning in the outside of a double right turn to enter the frwy. She was in the inner right and just decided to go straight, clipping my right quarter panel, puting me into a spin on the on ramp. She didn't even slow down. Just kept on going.

At this point, all I could think was "are you friggin' kiddin' me." Shoved it in reverse to get off the on ramp, while I told my son to keep an eye on her. Took me a few miles, but I caught her at a light and she denied it was her. Long story short, I pointed out that her dangling plastic bumper with my paint on it proved different and convinced her that she needed to pull over to exchange info.

Called the police, and when they showed I explained the event. The officer ask if I would like to press charges for hit and run. Not wanting to add insult to injury, I waived that right. I have a daughter the same age and all I could think of at the time was her in the same situation, although I really don't think she would have had then same reaction. I just figured the girl freaked and wasn't thinking straight.

Well the officer took the report from both us. There were no witnesses present, due to the fact I had to chase her halfway across town. She admitted fault, so basically end of story...right. WRONG.

Two days later she changed her mind and stated to her insurance company that I encroached her lane and hit her. WTF. Is this possible?

Yep, sure is. What a hassle. Fortunately, my insurance said is was cut and dry from the original report. They waived my deductible and had the truck repaired. But they needed me to make a supplimentary report to dispute her counter claim. Since the officer mentioned nothing about a hit and run, because I waived that, I had to make a second report to contest him not making any comment on this. Turning this in at the sheriff station was extremely frowned upon. They did not want to accept my supplemental with the explanation that it was basically calling their officer a liar. I can only guess that even though I didn't press charges, he was still suppose to make note of it in his report. I simply told them that this is what my insurance company suggested, beings that this event would be going to arbitration. Therefore they wanted it attached to the original report. Man, if looks could kill, I was a marked man.

If I knew now what I didn't then, I certainly would have charged for hit and run. I assumed there would be an arrest and again I was thinking of my daughter. Had the officer explained to me that she would have just received a citation and with the hindsight of her change in fault, I would have not had any second thoughts. Certainly would have made things a lot easier.

I am so glad to see you considered your wifes well being as your priority.Very nice.
The damage to the bumper does not look all that bad i would check the foam bumper impact bar to verify it was not broken. Also give the fiberglass tub a cursory check to make sure no damage was done.It does not look like this is the case but the hidden damage is always the problem.
Good luck with the repair.

Yeah, I have a story about a rear hit too. My ex got hit coming home from Pittsburgh. Guy in an old pickup hit the rear bumper on her Taurus cracking the paint and scuffing it pretty good. Trafic was real heavy so they just exchanged insurance info and went on their way.

Allstate apraised it at 600bucks & change. So the guy tells his company (Allstate) that someone hit him from behind and pushed his truck into her. They absolutely refused to pay the claim. They said they have to believe their insured since no police report was filed. Even though there was no real damage to the rear of this jerk's truck, they told her they both were victims of a hit and run driver. I guess if you rearend someone just say some invisable person pushed you into the car in front. She doesn't carry collision since it's an older car so she is left with a banged up bumper. My advise is call the cops and don't cut anyone a favor.

That's when you sue the guy directly. He hit you. If someone else hit him, it's his job to sue them for not only the damage to his car but for his liability for the damage to your car. If the Insurance won't pay, he has to pay it himself. If you let him go, you are the victim.

Ya, I know. It's hard to tell from my lousy pic, but I think in the big scuff the plastic has some cracking. What bothers me the most is not the damage, but the careless nature of some people that share the roads with us.

Thanks, I am sure it's not too bad. Have a appointment with my insurance company on Mon and we'll see what happens after that.

You should of press charges, she left the scene of an accident, she should of been cited and even arrested. You're a nice person, but you have to leave nice at home some times. If the Police took the report and she admitted to the accident in that report, then you covered insurance wise, just get the report number, give that to your insurance. Now hit her insurance hard, this needs to set an example for that stupid driver.. I too was hit from a young female driver, ON the CELL phone, I watched as she backed up into my PARKED Ram Truck. She lied to me that she wasn't on the CELL phone, my girlfriend and I both saw her. She called her mother, gave me the phone. Her mother asked me if her daughter was on the phone, I told her yes. The mother asked me if I was going to call the Police, I told her I didn't have to, they are already here, ME... the girl started crying again, I told her you should not lie to others and never to a Police Officer, sometimes we are off duty YOUNG LADY.. I love my job...

Use this as a learning experience. Alway the very first thing after a accident get the tag number...forget about looking at the damage or talking to the other driver getting registration in order etc. Write down the tag number and vehicle description. I have witnessed so many hit and runs that as a witness I write down the tag numbers and it has saved many hit and run victims. In this city where I reside it seems the norm rather than the exception. If they take off, unless it is a stolen car or plate you can relax. Good luck, Rob

The damage looks minor. You may consider just paying for it out of pocket rather than involving an insurance company. Car Fax will show an 'accident' and the future resale value will be impacted.

Sorry for the situation. If you are handy, you could use the Dupilcolor Perfect Match spray paint to fix an avoid paying your deductible costs. Good guidance on their site. I was quoted $1000 to have my wife's Lexus fixed and did it with their prodcuts for under $30. The wife was very happy and used the money for the C5. My deductible was $500 so you can do the math. If you want to contact me at shbailey@att.net and provide me your phone number I can talk you through the fix. Worse case is you are not happy and then take it to a body shop.
