Even though I felt like crap with a cold or flu, whatever, I HAD to get over to the Events Center here in Sevierville, TN to check out the Corvette Expo. While there, I kept seeing these C5's with a total tan interior. I've never see one before in my search as most have the black console and dash so, I kept looking for someone who owned one of them and finally found the gent standing next to a red 50th Anniv. vert and asked him about the interior. He said it was a "special" edition of the Anniversary model and it only came in them.
Correct?
Anyway, I kept chatting with him and he, rather proudly, told me he bought the car new and it only had 6000 miles on it! Now, I didn't say anything to him but, my mind was saying...WTF!...but!...How and WHY do you do that!?

Oh, here's a pic of the interior in another vette..

Reason: add pic
It might be the shale interior that was in the 2003 Anniversary Red coupe and convertible. There was another shale interior in the 2004 Commemorative Edition Lemans Blue coupe and convertible as well. I'm not sure if they are the exact same color or considered a different color as I have a black/black interior.
It sounds like this guy bought his "new", untitled 2003 Anniversary Edition from a dealer who probably put on the 6000 miles.
I always found it funny that a dealer could sell a "used" car as new as long as it was untitled. If I drove a new car and put 6000 miles on it, it would be "used".
He said HE bought it new in '03 and HE put the 6000 on it.

The picture above is the 2004 Commemorative Edition with Shale Interior. The "tan" interior, carpet and lower door sills, is called "Oak". Picture below of black/oak combo with aftermarket seats.

Going to have to respectfully disagree with you on that. My picture may not show up on your computer with the correct colors but, the interior in the blue vette (and the red one) were the same and they were two shades of tan, oak, saddle, brown or whatever. I've encountered shale interiors and they are more of a shade of grey.
I believe the only interior colors that GM offered that did not have black dashboards were the Shale interiors found in the 2003 50th Anniversary package and the 2004 Commemorative Edition. I'm sure owners of the 03' Anniversary Red and the 04' Commemorative blue will chime in soon. Perhaps he had a custom interior.

Disagree all you want. It's a shale interior. It's the ONLY interior available in the 03 50th Anniversary Red and 04 LeMans Blue Commemoritive Edition.

If he has an '03 anniversary red car, it was available only with the shale interior. Now the dealer had very high connections at GM, perhaps he could have special ordered a different interior, but that would be very rare. Best bet to confirm is to just look on the window sticker and see what color it says the interior is.

Well, if that's the case, there are two colors of shale. One a tan shade and another a grey shade. Because the color of the interior I was looking at today was two shades of TAN.
I even remember remarking to the owner that I had only seen shale interiors in cars like his but, he insisted that his was a "special" version.

I have a 50th AE Vert with the shale interior, and while it might be the lighting, this look a bit lighter in color than mine.

All 2003 Corvettes had Anniversary badges, emblems, etc. However the "special" version he may have been referring to was the "1SC" package ($5000) that included special anniversary paint and trim. The package included monogrammed headrests, special champaign-colored wheels, additional 50th anniversary emblems (on the front quarter panels) and "Anniversary Red" paint, a shale "khaki" interior and a F55 Magnetic Selective Ride Control suspension.
Below is a link that has many pics of the Anniversary Edition Convertible with the Pace Car decal package. If this is not the color you saw, it's custom.

A new car with 6,000 miles on it,
I am not trying to flame, criticize or annoy anyone, but discussion and color comparisons based on pix like these that are bleached out because of excess light are pointless. I have seen countless, including my own, pix of black interiors that look grey because of the blast of the flash. Since many of us are unable to hold a camera steady enough to turn off the flash in fairly low light, we have a hard time capturing the true colors of interiors. On the blue car, I can SEE that there is more than one color, but to decide what color it is, I need a truer pic.

Agreed on the color/flash issue. However, if the car does not have a black dashboard, the only alternative color GM offered in 2003 and 2004 was shale which had a "khaki" look and certainly looks much darker in person than the photos above.
Sure looks like the interior of my 04 CE vert. When I look at the shale/oak interiors I do not see anything that could be in the grey color family on the color charts....
the darker of the two shades is called "neutral" and the lighter is shale. But the interior color on the window sticker is "50th Anniversary Shale".
I'll post a picture of the window sticker if that will help you. There are many shades of blue, but that doesn't make it not blue because you have seen a different shade. As the others have said, it was only available in 03 AE and 04 CE.
OK, sorry to dig up an old thread but I need to apologize for my insistence that the shale color was shades of gray as it stemmed from a color I observed at a car show way back when in a Vette that must have been a custom and a photo on a dealers site that could have been the lighting conditions of the shoot...and then there's the Wiki description...
"Composition and color
Shales are typically composed of variable amounts of clay minerals and quartz grains and the typical color is gray. Addition of variable amounts of minor constituents alters the color of the rock."
Anyway, I realize now after much investigation, that the Corvette use of that color IS for the more beige shades and I stand corrected. I can definitely be hard headed at times and I don't want to fall into bad graces with those on this forum as I may need help in the future. Hopefully NEAR future!
