I'm looking to buy a vette to run Time Attack Time Trials. I was wondering which car would be the better track car in stock form (with R compounds).
Engine performance is very close, 405hp for the c5 z06 vs. 400 hp base c6.
As far as I can tell the c5 z06 is 150 pounds lighter. Is that correct?
Do either of these cars come with an oil cooler?
Thanks,
Greg
By far the c5z makes a better track car. The c6 makes a better daily driver
Neither has an oil cooler, but the c5z has a power steering cooler
Thanks for the response. I sold my m3 and I'll be looking for "the one" starting tomorrow. I'm glad you said the c5z because I think the c5 is a better looking car
I ask about the oil cooler because one of our club members has a c6 base. When we were at Watkins Glen he said his oil temp was at 320*.
I'm sure adding an oil cooler shouldn't be too difficult.
Another question I have is what is a good inexpensive light weight wheel for the track?
Any other thoughts on the c5z vs. the c6?

The stock c5 z06 made by speedline are actually good track wheels and quite light, alot of people even just run rears up front.
I don't need anything that expensive. Just a replica that isn't too heavy and can stand up to track abuse.
Are there any other problems with the c5z other than the 01s oil consumption and the 02/03 valve spring problems.
Greg
Yes the power is close. That's why I held off from buying a 04 ZO6 and bought an 05 Z51 C6. One has 405 the other has 400 hp. Well, I sold my C6 after a few years and now have an 03 ZO6. The driving experience is different. The ZO6 is more of a race car and in my opinion a lot more fun to drive and it feels A LOT faster than my C6. Some of that is from the torque management software in the C6. If I were in your position I'd go for the ZO6.
Steering wheel column lock and EBCM are the other two fairly common issues.
I read about the steering lock problem. What's up with that? I would guess that just about all the c5Zs have had that taken care of by now.
What is EBCM?
What about a price range? They all seem to be in the $25k+ range around here. Doesn't seem to matter the year or mileage.
Thanks for the help,
Greg
Betelgeuse!Betelgeuse!Betelgeuse! (Sorry, I had to!)
I never heard of those trials but they seem interesting. Tho' I've only had my '02 Z06 for a week(and my first Corvette), the clincher for me was driving a brand new C6 after driving my car for the first time. 9 years newer and it didn't compare to my black beauty, which felt faster, stronger, and tighter than the new car. I paid $24k, with 16k miles, and couldn't be happier.

Now we're in trouble.
The club I run Time Attack is with Corvettes of Mass. comscc.org/
There are 17 classes. Your car is classed depenging on what it is and what mods it has. You get 3 timed laps with no traffic. Your fastest fastest lap counts. If you have the fastest lap in your class you win a trophy
My track car is a BMW but I want something with a little more power.
Here's a video of my record setting run a couple weeks ago at NHMS. http://youtu.be/AkaqdxGH1kw
Nice to see there are places on the east coast to do these things. I'm in NJ and I'm just doing the research now.
How fast were you going on the longest straightaway???
Definitely the C5Z. I bought an 01 C5Z last year to build as a dedicated track car. It had 113K miles and I paid $14.9K. I started NASA Time Trials with the Southeast region this year. Almost all the cars here in SE in TTA are C5Zs and they typically finish 1-2-3, Video from Road Atlanta in August. Finished 3rd that weekend with a best time of 1:36.6
Other issues with the car include a clutch that doesn't last long and plastic/weak trans peices. Get ready to drop some coin on those, especially if you're gonna track the car.
I owned a 2005 and 2006 C6 then switched to a 2009 Z06. I ran all three cars at VIR at various times. I sold my 2009 due to medical issues about a 1 1/2 ago and after recovering bought a 2003 C5 Z06. I've got to say that I enjoy my C5 more than any of the C6's. As one person stated, it feels more like a sports car and is much easier to throw around a little when desired.
My only issue with the C5 Z06 is rear tire wear.....caused by spirited acceleration on a recurring basis

NHMS is a smaller road course. Only 1.6 miles. The fastest I get on the main straight with the BMW is about 120 mph (at NH) but my BMW only has about 230 whp. I had the 4th fastest time overall out of about 80 cars. At Watkins Glen and some of the bigger tracks the top speed is much faster.
