shift forks are just fine. Learning to shift properly, not jamming gears
after 25,000 hard 3000 to redline track miles my stock MN 6 trans is just fine.
only major change was the added of the trans cooler.
Column lock bypass is a good idea.
again Cooling is key
I'm saying it as preventative maintainance, like I mentioned in my previous post, his car may NEVER have any issues. He wanted to know potential issues that may come up so I told him just that and how to stop them from happening.
I have a feeling a lot of people on here just turn a blind eye to these issues until it plagues them.

I will definatly be doing preventative maintainance. I plan on changing trans and diff oil. Lower temp themostat. Valve springs if I get a 02 or 03.. I guess an oil seperater should be added too.
First I have to buy a car. There are a few in my area.
There is a 2004, yellow, with 18k miles. Asking price $26,427
A 2003, black with 23k miles. Asking price $24,987
Another yellow one, 2003, 21k miles. Asking $26,325
and a couple more.
Winter coming so I feel like I should be able to get one for a decent price.
I'm leaning towards the 2004. No valve spring worries. Is that correct?
Greg
If it's not broke don't fix it. Stock clutch/tranny are absolutely fine with proper driving. It's kind of hard to hurt these unless you are adding more power and/or banging/grinding gears. Some coolers maybe some real seats and a harness bar is all you really NEED. Stock c5z pads are good to start as you do more track days i'm sure you will want to get a race pad. Some cooling ducts will help as well.
You will see oil temps of 290+ if you are pushing it on most tracks. May even get a trans overtemp warning. Also tie rod/ball joint boots will need to be covered. Those will burn up as well.
Head over to Roadracing and Autocross forum you will get a lot more first hand experience over there.

Just as a refference, I got my 2002 Z06 with 13k on the clock about 8 months ago for $23k. There are great deals out there if you're willing to be patient. Good luck on your hunt!

Betel, all those prices are quite high. I paid 24k for mine with 16k miles. Were they all Z's?
any car you take to the track need maintenance, lot of it.
for each event:
Check brake pads, flush brake fluid
Check each bolt in each wheel wheel too assure they are tight
( suspension parts )
check clutch fluid
check PS fluid
clean out radiators ( coolant, oil, trans, diff and PS radiators )
check for lost wheel wts, rebalanced and replace wts as needed
Visual inspection of whole car. fix as need
Every Two Events:
change oil YES ever 500 miles . (Oil goes from 100% to 30% after two track weekends )
9 qts of M1 50-W15 ( 3qt accusump)
flush brake fluid
Evey four events:
change
trans fluid
diff fluid
PS fluid
Clutch fluid
change tires ( use scrbbs slicks )
change brake pads and rotors.
flush brake fluid
Truck and trailer
check brakes on both
change brake fluid on truck before each trip.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you aren't going to purchase track insurance, I would get a car you can afford to fix on your own if you crash or someone else crashes into you.

Yeah, they are all Zs. That's why I'm waiting. Winters coming and I think they would want to unload them. I was thinking if I could get one for in the low 20s I'd be doing alright. These are all dealer cars. The private sale cars are higher priced. Go figure.
The yellow 2004 with 18k miles is the one I want (I think). What do you guys think a fair price would be for that one? I'm thinking around $24k or less. They're asking $26,427. They just listed it. I emailed them a couple days ago asking for pictures and no response yet.....and the game begins...

Yep. It sure is a lot of work but worth it IMO.
That sounds like overkill in the freqency of the fluid changes (except maybe the engine oil). I've run many events in my BMW with the same diff, tranny, PS, etc.....fluids. I run Red Line.

I know. I put my BMW in the tire wall at Mt. Tremblant. Cost be $2200.

Not running Hard enough?
just kidding.
main reason to change trans and diff oils IMO is to feel the fluid for metal shavings. If you find some, time to take the trans or diff apart.

If I was drag racing I'd probably worry about the diff and trans a little more but I'm pretty good at heel/toe so it doesn't worry me all that much. I don't do burnouts leaving to pits (or ever, anywhere). Hell, if a BMW can take my driving, a Corvette should be able to.

I'll agree with everything you said exempt this. My friend and I have towed for years changing the brake fluid maybe once a year and no issues. That's a might excessive there. lol

Good lord.
Are tracked Vettes that maintenance intensive?
I've been tracking my E36M3 for 5 years, and I change the oil about every 4-5 weekends, when it slightly changes color. I went 2 years before changing the brake fluid (finally boiled the Motul 600 after 2 years, oops). I changed the diff fluid once and I've never changed the trans fluid.
