Given what your goals are, if it were my money, I'd get an 01 - 04 coupe 6MT with under 40K miles (open air when you want it; hard-top when you don't and with your budget for mods your going to blow away the Z's anyway). Then I'd get:
and talk to Rick about beefing up your differential and swapping in 3.73 gears: http://rkt56.com/
Pick up a good set of LT Headers and pair that with a used Z06 Ti cat-back (very light and excellent sound with headers. You can buy these in the FS section on this forum; there's almost always some for sale.). Stage 3 or better clutch with a tick adjustable master cylinder and a remote bleeder line and an MGW shifter.
Then let your favorite shop put everything in for you and dyno-tune it then smile and
Lots of ways you could go with this. Also, not sure how set you are on having your local shop do the install, but England Green and Tick Performance are both offering specials on A&A supercharger installations at the moment...
Excellent, this is the kind of advice I was looking for. So with a ~40k mile car you feel like it would be ok to slap the blower on and still get decent longevity out of a stock bottom end (at least for my desired power levels)? I'm assuming you would recommend timing chain and oil pump upgrades during the cam swap? Does swapping to a 3.73 amount to a similar final drive ratio as the z06? I realize ECS and A&A provide a lot of the centri kits on this forum, but all three of the shops I mentioned use procharger kits. If I don't plan to be at the limits of the supercharger, does it really matter which brand I choose? I like using local shops for things because it builds a good relationship for any future mods or mechanical problems.
What kind of plan would you recommend for a higher mileage car, maybe around 100k miles. Supercharge it anyway? H/C/I instead of blower? Some kind of stroker? I guess my issue with modding aged platforms is that I don't mind screwing around with the car and making repairs, but I like to do it on my own schedule when I can -- as opposed to say, when something explodes.

Lots of already modded cars around-it's always cheaper to buy modded than buy new mods. Fastest way to kill the price of a car is to mod it.

That's very true, although most of them seem to be found with private sellers. From what my CU is telling me the financing process is kind of a PITA for private sales. Just a lot more documentation, notarization, etc.
Well the bank kind of boned me. I was all set to make an offer on a nice 02 Z06 and when I gave them the VIN number all of a sudden I was told they wouldn't lend on anything older than 2004. My account manager had told me that allowances could be made as long as the car's value was appropriate, but I guess the loan officer has the real say. Bummer. Well, at least I know what year I'm looking for now.
