Default Cold air intake

I have a 2004 Z06 stock. Today at car show, 2 vette owners suggested that I shoud get a black wing cold air induction kit. I'm more interested in helping engine breath rather than picking up a few hp. I can get it installed for about 100 bucks. I have very little experience on working on engine. I would value any opinions.

If your not out for more ponies, just use a K&N drop in and forget about it.

Do nothing if your not after power. The stock setup is the best of compromises that gm could come up with and meet durability requirements.

Where can you get one installed for a $100? You mean just for the labor, right? If you mean both, PM! I can put the damn thing in myself.

Vararam and Callaway Honker are true CAI's that breatch cool ambient air. Blackwing will take in some underhood air, as will any other open element intake.

They now make a cover for the Blackwing to make it a true CAI! I just installed mine today.

More Air = More Power
No need to change anything from stock unless you want more power.

Halltech's C5 Killer Bee II Conversion Package added +24 RWHP/25 lbs-ft torque over the Blackwing on a C5Z06 with an LS3 conversion.

Here is the email just received tonight:
I has great success with the Halltech Killer Bee II that another C5Z owner wants one. The Vette was a 03 Z06 with a LS3 416 and gained 24 rwhp and 25 ft-lbs over the SLP Blackwing. I can send the dyno graph and the gains were everywhere. The Z finished at 584 rwhp.
I should have the actual dyno tomorrow. It is after 12 midnight here in WI.

We have seen similar increases over stock on the C5 LS6 motor.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm just going to keep it stock for now.
Would put out a picture but don't know how!

So where does it get it's cold air from? Do you cut the shroud like the honker, or does it pick up air from the front vents like the vararam?

The "ice box cover" for the SLP Blackwing was around years ago when the Blackwing was first introduced. It was available in ABS or carbon fiber. They didn't fit really tight to the Blackwing, but it was close. It looked almost oem.

You do have to cut the shroud (ala Honker) to get cooler/cold air outside of the engine bay.

I had one of the original ABS "ice box cover" products for a Blackwing when I first got my Z16. FWIW, I got intermittent lean bank codes. An expensive tune was out of the question.

Not, HALLTECH has the MAF laminar air flow straightener which would probably solve the lean bank codes.

I had your earlier product on a 2004 c5 zo6, it worked well and the fit/finish was superior to the vararam. However, I find it very hard to believe one would gain 24rwhp/25lbs/torque on a mostly stock ls6 motor. Is this with a tune as well?

Obviously those numbers are completely 100% BS. It is easy to lie with dyno numbers. Run the baseline with a heat soaked car, with the hood down and no cooling fans. Then make the CAI run on a cold car with tons of cooling fans, the hood up, etc. This is how manufacturers exaggerate their numbers majorly. If any CAI adds more than 6 HP over stock I would be shocked. 24 HP is an absolute pipe dream.

6rwhp can be made, there's no question about that. Look at documented times from the fast list here, the same people ran noticeably faster (and trapped a few mph higher) with just cold-air intakes and tires. I think on the bigger c6 zo6, about 14-15hp was seen on the engine dyno. That is a more controlled environment and easily believable. As noted before that's also a bigger motor.

On the other hand, GM High Tech did a test a few years ago and the car gained around 32rwhp+ with JUST the Halltech intake. That's not a typo btw, the number was in the mid 30s. I think ECS did this, because Chris or Doug chimed in saying they didn't change anything. I have a hard time believing 30rwhp+ can be replicated and its likely an anomaly, but variations do exist.

Again I find it hard to believe that similar (say 20rwhp instead of the 24rwhp) gains can be attained with just the intake on a mostly stock c5 ls6 motor. If so, more power to Halltech - that's a great product.

I know my Mopar club CenCalLX took all the top CAIs for the 6.1L SRT8 Hemi and tested them on the dyno. The worst made zero gains (K&N), and the best made 6hp (AFE II). These tests were done all on a car with zero other mods, and in a controlled environment. Like the Corvette CAI manufacturer claims, many CAI for the SRT8 claimed 20+ HP and it was proven to be flat-out false. Who knows, maybe they are far more trustworthy with the Vette, but I doubt it.

Edit: According to the K&N website, their CAI adds 21.09 HP to the 6.1L Hemi. Our tests proved it gained ZERO.

It says the car has an LS3 conversion. That may have something to do with it.

Halltech stated they had seen similar increases over stock on the c5 ls6motor. I noted this in my other response...

In a test with the c6 zo6 I believe the Halltech made about 15rwhp more than the vararam. However trap speeds were nearly identical...
