Not really, 'bout the same. I wasn't having any problems, I just wanted to change it before really cold temps since it was 11+ years old. I already ordered some Amsoil to replace it.
I just happened across this for Advance Auto Parts website:
Advance Auto Parts DEX III/M Automatic Transmission Fluid (1 qt.)
Advance Auto Parts DEX III/M Automatic Transmission Fluid is formulated for older model Ford and General Motors vehicles requiring MERCON®, DEXRON-I®, DEXRON-II® and DEXRON-III®.
Product Features:
Formulated for older model Ford and General Motors vehicles
Suitable for transmissions requiring MERCON®, DEXRON-I®, DEXRON-II® and DEXRON-III® automatic transmission fluid
Not for use in transmissions that specify MERCON V®, MERCON SP®, DEXRON-VI® or Type F
If I'm not mistaken manual transmission fluid is a golden brown color while automatic transmission fluid is red? Wonder what the properties differences is between the two fluids.
and yet what if the previous owner changed it with a synthetic and I change it back to.. wait dont use Dextron VI use a manual transmission fluid? Im so confused.

Use manual trans fluid in manual trans.
There...no more confusion!
Note that a key difference of the Dexron III and Dexron VI spec is that the VI has a viscosity about 40% lower - per the somewhat dated TSBs, I wouldn't run it in a manual and either would use an aftermarket alternative such as the Torque Drive, or the "new" GM 88861800.
Serviced mine today, used GM Manual Transmission fluid. Wow what a difference, smoother and quiet. Well worth it to perform that maintenance procedure. I was just coming up on 70K.
Okaky, here's a follow up. I had changed my fluid, "just because" it was 11 years old even though the car only has 25K on it. Used Dexron VI since it said right on the bottle it was the correct replacement -- then read about the recommendation not to use it on this thread.
Starting a day or two after putting the VI in, shifting started getting a little, "notchity" then even started getting a little hard to get into first and reverse and even popped out of first once because it hadn't seated all the way in there when I thought it had. So the Dex VI is definitely not as good as the III was.
Got some Amsoil Torque Drive ATF per recommendations on this thread and put it in yesterday. Much better already with shifting as good as or better than before with the original fluid and hopefully will continue to improve more over the next week or two.
