Here is a write-up I did for my Vette Club's newsletter:
The Doctor is ‘IN’
Dr. Color Chip that is! Dr. Color Chip is an automotive paint chip repair system. The system repairs paint chips, scratches, and road rash. The repaired paint is a perfect match to the factory color and repairs are very smooth to the touch, unlike other products that leave blobs of paint that make a vehicle look like it has been vandalized in Braille. Dr. Color Chip’s paint is not the typical stuff that is found at the local auto parts store or dealership. It is a unique formulation of high-quality automotive tints and chemicals that when used correctly, allows it to dry very quickly. This enables the blending away of all of the excess paint in just minutes, leaving paint only in the chips. Dr. Color Chip was tested by the Wall Street Journal and found to be their top choice when compared to five competitor’s products. The WSJ claimed that Dr. Color Chip was foolproof and likened using the product to finger painting.
To begin using this product just go online to drclorchip.com and place an order. To ensure the correct color match, Dr. Color Chip requires the factory color code and VIN number of a vehicle when placing an order. The kit received will include one rubber glove, five fluid ounces of paint (small size), a bottle of Pre-Fast blending solution, and several applicators. The instructions will begin "Paint! Dab! Remove!" and incredibly that is all there is to the process. To begin, just clean away any dirt and wax from the area to be painted. Then apply paint to the chip using one of the applicators provided, smear it smooth with a gloved finger, and after the paint dries, wipe off the excess paint with a soft cloth moistened with the Pre-Fast blending solution. For deep chips a second application may be required.
Corvette owners will be pleased to know that Dr. Color Chip works very well at repairing the "road rash" we get along the lower rocker panels between the front and rear wheels. The product application steps to cover road rash are the same as those used for a chip, but just on a grander scale. Instead of using a small applicator, a large piece of cloth is used. Using the cloth as the paint applicator, simply wipe over the entire road rash area. Once dry, remove the excess paint with the blending solution. This last step will take a little more time and solution than the chip repair due to the amount of paint used to cover the road rash area. A couple of tricks I found for great road rash coverage was to first thoroughly clean the area to be painted with isopropyl alcohol, and to let the paint cure for two hours before removing the excess with the blending solution.
Dr. Color Chip really works. Make your appointment now!
I have it and it works to hide small road chips and little scratches. It does not make them look like new, but you need to look to see the corrected area. That is not to say that if the nose has many chips they will not be seen, you will see them.
I would say it is a good product to fix a specific point that does not have a lot of other damaged areas around it. I had a small scratch on the Halo just about midway up near the window on the drivers side. It did a good job and you need to look hard at that area to see it, where before I fixed it you would notice it as soon as you got near the drivers side.
Hope this helps.
I bought and used Dr. Colorchips about a year ago on a black car. Didn't like the result - seemed like the paint didn't fill in the depression enough. Could be I wasn't "holding my tongue just right," but...
I previously had been using the Langka chip repair method. Although it takes a bit longer, I preferred it because it completely filled in the "hole" and allowed me to blend in the new paint to the rest of the car. Used it on a red BMW 5 series and the finished result blended in perfectly. It did take a bit of elbow grease, but the result justified the time. Besides, spending time with our babies is what we prefer to do anyway.
So I have gone back to the Langka repair method.
Others will have their own opinions, of course, but you asked for personal experiences. So here is one....
These kits are bs, All they are is touch up paint and some watered down thinner... Anyone can get the same outcome by just getting some paint and touching up the little chips then taking some watered down thinner to whipe the area you touched up so it picks up all the extra paint...
I recently tried it on my torch red C5 and it worked well for the small chips and road rash on the front but it does not work for scratches. A little expensive too.
I've used it on my 03 black. Rather than use the finger wipe method, I used a two inch "clean" black rubber squeegee that comes with a window tinting kit to initially wipe the paint of the chip once it was applied. This allowed a little more paint to remain in the chip. This process of wipe, clean and re-apply had to be performed 2-3 times but you will slowly see the chip hole being filled. I used to have quite a few areas of road rash but a Sunday afternoon of careful applications and cleaning made the majority of the chips disappear. Biggest complaint is the small amount of cleaner sent with the kits.
