Just to stir the pot a little bit, The later engine block in the non Z06 Vette was an LS6 block, I am guessing that GM had an abundance of the Z blocks and used them in the non Z Vettes, Now that was the block only so it didn't have the power the Z06 had.

Ok, I'm not at home now, but will post when I get off work. The thermometer plug, vacuum line for the vent control I had to fix, and a couple more that indicate to me that the person who installed or worked on the car didn't complete the swap correctly.

I bought my 02 coupe 6 sp used... from a used car lot.... infiniti dealer in Austin.....

Had a friend locally check it out for me, he knows cars, and I trust his visual inspection..

When I got there, the car was as he described it...

Had a cold air intake, and a cat back...

I looked it over and saw it had headers

test drove the car, it it seemed a step or 2 faster than my brothers bone stock 03 coupe

bought the car and brought it home....

got to reading more and more on corvette forum...

looked at the head casting numbers, intake casting number, block casting and injector numbers.. all were LS6 (all of the above numbers could have come stock on the 02 except the head casting number)

had to replace the clutch... found the rpo sticker on the back of the head, and got the engine ID numbers off of the block...

the ID number does not match a VIN number per the factory service manuals that tell you how to decode the engine stamping number on the left pad (not the casting number)

RPO sticker also denoted LS6 2003. visual inspection also noted it has a LS6 PCV system

Finding out what it had was cool... finding a LS6 was a great bonus....

Lol, ok. Well that definately stirred the pot some more. Do I just need to dyno to tell for sure? I guess its not that important, but I do have a little OCD....LOL

I thought in the old days the VIN and the engine ID were the same number, Meaning Matching numbers? On the C5 is the VIN and the engine ID number matching?

Bill,

I will get some pics...(next time i go to his shop) a friend took his engine out of his z06... there are numbers on the drivers side of the block... it is not a full vin...

it has the last 6 of the vin along with a gm id number, a year number, a plant number and then the last 6 of the vin

I had to do some research when i was trying to determine if my engine was original or not...

my engine does not have a correct gm vin derivative... that is why i believe i have a crate engine...
