Default oil pressure sender dead?

Tonight driving home from work my oil pressure suddenly started climbing and topped out at 90 psi. I pulled over, shut the car down and restarted, same thing. I went to the next exit with a gas station and checked it out - no leaks, nothing obvious. When I turned the key to "on" without the engine running and it showed 46 psi. The analog gauge matches the DIC readout as well.

Is this typical of a blown sender? Guess I should have changed it when I had the intake off after all.

Yep- your oil pressure sensor is toast. A pressure reading without the car running is a tell-tale sign. In a couple of days, the analog needle will be pegged and your digital reading will be @ 130 psi.

As others have said it is the sender, I went through this same thing last year, The intake is really easy to take off, What I did was make a relocation kit and moved the location of the sender for future issues if it happens again, It is now mounted under the drivers side fuel rail cover, Can now be changed in 5 mins if need to be.

Just don't over tighten the new OPS.

I've not seen it matter if you get a brass one or an aluminum one. I've had an aluminum one from Gene at GMPartsHouse for almost a year with no issues.

Since you have already taken the manifold off I don't have to convince you how easy it is to do it that way. I can see from here that you won't need new gaskets.

Thanks guys, I think I'll just pop the intake off. If I decide to relocate it I'll probably just use some -4 braided hose and fab a mount near the valve cover.

I just about passed out when the chick at O'Reilys told me the sender was $45. I thought they had the wrong part at first. Youch! I'm used to an OP sender being under $15.

I am curious. Do the failures occur only on engines that are frequently run at high RPM? Have any of you who seldom, if ever, run your engines over 3500 RPM had OPM failure. In short, is this a high RPM problem?

In my case I hardly go over 3500 and it happened to me, Alway has clean oil in the motor, I think it just happens.
