I assume you're talking to me egrand333. The only other driving experience i have is in an old f 150, didnt think that would apply. I almost bought an m3 vert until someone mentioned the vette, now if all goes to plan i'll be getting a vette this week or next(yeah i'v been saying it for a while but crap keeps coming up). I"m tired of paying all the maintenance on my 3 series and dont want to drop around 2k a year for the "privilege" of owning an m3. Besides, bow ties are cool.

I get it , "Jerry" as in slang for German. Ha Ha. I was thinking more alomg the lines of what the audience would chant while the guests were throwing chairs at each other on the Jerry Springer show. Nothing wrong with German cars at all.
Back on topic, my son has a bone stock 99 auto that had about 110,000mi. and mine is a 97 auto that had about 60,000mi on it, stock also and at the 1/8 mile track he beat me twice even though I got a good jump on him off the line. Never could understand why.
Maybe its all in my head, but when i baby my 3series for a while or let someone else drive it it is noticeably less responsive and seems weaker the first couple times i really get on it afterwards, the transmission also shifts differently. Now when i get in a hurry or just get bored on the way home and start pushing it everything changes, better response, seemingly more power different tranny shift points (this is all without putting it in sport mode). I know the 3 series can learn how you drive and learn how you want it to shift(if you use the manumatic mode), i do now know if the program in the vette is adaptable like that.
If he's driven aggressively the cars whole life his motor and other bits could have worn in differently, I've also been told that the extremely high strung engine in the m3 wont really break in until after 30k+ miles.
Just a couple ideas.
thanks for the reply, kinda what i am leaning towards. his car seemed to hit alittle harder wot and rev a bit easier......
What about tire sizes? Are you both running same size/stock tire sizes? Different diameters can act as different gear ratios. Gear ratios make a BIG difference in performance.

This was going to be my guess. Is there any way he has smaller diameter tires on his rear (giving him an effective shorter gear ratio)? Does he have aftermarket rims, or has he put on Z06 sizes on the rear?
i did not think of that. i said we were both stock but i was wrong.
he has 245/45-17 front and 275/40-18 rear........i have 265/40-17 front and 295/35-18 rear. what do you think old vette?

That's even worse then, because by those tire sizes given, your car should feel quicker and build up RPM"s more rapidly with your shorter rear tires!
Sometimes vehicles that are driven harder preform better...in my humble experience.
There IS an element of truth here!! The stock computer DOES "learn" and adjust to how the car is driven provided it is done so of a fairly consistent basis. My car was used in a dyno display where they did 15 pulls. 3 the first time,,then about every 45 min did a pair. The print out showed after the 1'st two each pull showed small HP and torque gains. At the end it gained about 15 Hp and 20 pound feet of torque. She was perked for a while,,but "normal driving" eventually backed her down. Right after,,ran a 13.08/110.24 later trips to test and tune would only net 13.1's and 13.2's at best. SO,,if it is driven pretty hard regularly,,it COULD perk up a bit and run a LITTLE better than some others.
it makes no sense to me either. maybe mr. bill is right, he has a 1 of a kind C5 and i have a lemon.
Does your friend have a stock clutch or an aftermarket clutch with stronger clamping force and / or a lighter flywheel? Is your clutch slipping? You could possibly have oil or grease contamination on the linings from oil leaking due to a faulty rear main crankshaft seal or transmission input shaft seal. You may also have burned or glazed clutch linings. Do you notice excessive clutch chatter? These are possible causes. I don't want to alarm you but check first to see if there is any oil accumulation, even the slightest amount, at the bottom of the bellhousing. I bet he has a better clutch and lighter flywheel.
thanks for all the replys. i am going to do some digging around and see what i can come up with. to be clear my car is in no way slow, but my friends car has a bit more spunk. on a side note i am not hard on any vehicle and go to great lengths to properly care for them.

There is the problem. Your cats are clogged from babying your sports car.
As weird as it sounds, maybe yours is not as "broken in" as your friend's. Just my 2¢ worth.
Do both cars register the same rpm's at the same speed in the same gear? Could be a gearing issue that one of you just is not aware of, such as incorrect labeling of gears. Again, I am guessing here.
Many years ago a friend and I both had Chevelle SS cars. Same year, engine, tranny, etc. however, I never could outrun him. We traded cars thinking it was the driver. However, his outran mine with me driving his car. His was just a little more powerful. Go figure.
