Most non-Vette people wouldn't notice an LS3 under the hood. The LS3/L76 intake manifold looks amazingly like a regular LS1/6 intake when you remove the cover. I say build a large-cube LS3 with a mild cam that doesn't lope hard.

I did just that, kept the stock ti mufflers. 495 rwhp/465 rwtq. At a light, or just crusing around, seems like a stock 346 ls6 till I get on it.
Get your 243 heads ported, polished and milled but tell the shop not to remove the 243 casting number, either shorty headers or LT headers like American Racing or XS Power with cats, Stock TI mufflers, a sleeper cam like a EPS 218-222-116, TPIS 90mm LS6 intake and VMAX CNC LS2 TB, VARARAM or Killer beehive CAI, Underdrive pulley. It will look, drive and sound stock except for the CAI and headers but be stupid fast.

As everyone else already mentioned about stock re-worked heads, 3.90's or 4.10 gears, small cam (nothing too lopey)...and instead of going with LT's or even shorties; if you want to go stealth, pick up some LS7 manifolds and mid-pipe. Also, as far as the intake goes, I've seen some guys cut the radiator shroud which will be hidden underneath the stock air box...same concept as a Callaway Honker, but using stock components.
