Default Electronic Lock Module??? Never Heard of...

So my car is at the Dealer to fix the Service Column Lock Issue, says I need a Electronic Lock Module replaced, about $300, Is this related to the door locks? Not having an issue with those....Any ideas?

Make them come up with a real description for the module first.

Yeah I tried to google it but nothing came up. Said it was not part of the Service Bulletin but needed to be replaced....

Do they mean an electronic door lock module? If so its nothing to do with the column lock. Get the car back and check the codes before giving out $$$

Or you can search the C5 Tech section using "column lock bypass" as a search term and come up with far more information than your dealer has.

Or read this: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ky-please.html

There is no real reason to fork over 3 bills to a dealer who sounds like they don't know what they are doing. Maybe you can print the "faqs" page in its entirety and show it to the Service Manager.

Was your column locked with the key in the ignition and the engine started? If the column was not locked, get the car back and purchase and install a CLB. About $50 from Corvettes of Houston plus shipping.

Lots of reading on the column lock problems of the C5. Start here and read the first few pages then go to the end of the thread and back up about a dozen pages and read to the end of the thread. In all likelihood your battery is what started the column lock symptoms....

sound to me like a stealership rip off. your other choice is to tell them that the column lock "replacement" is a recall item and doesn't require any additional modifications, and to just perform the recall work. personally, i would just take the car back, buy the column lock by pass set up from corvettes of houston and either make the correction yourself, or have a qualified non dealership mechanic do the work. if you go the mechanic route, it will give you a good chance to establish a relationship with someone for future work on your car.

GET YOUR CAR BACK FROM THE DEALER NOW!

You probably have a bad battery or one on the way out.

Get a new battery that has a minimum 120 RC (reserve capacity) like an AC-Delco 78-6YR, cost you around $105-110.

Watch this video: Video

If you want a little security with the issue, order a ECL by-pass module from Corvette's of Houston $50. and install it yourself. Here's a the instructions: LS1How To

Just get the CLB and not worry about it again. And I would not let the dealer do any work on the car at this point.

I read all of those posts, great info. My car actually had the first Service Bulletin fixed, not the second. The wheel did not lock, just had the fuel shut at 2 mph. Had the battery replaced about a year ago, but will have it tested to make sure its still in good shape. So after they fix it, can I still install the CLB?
Thanks

You just had $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ of advice. They would have charged you $$ for fixing the biggest GM induced problem with the C5. Lucky break

If the steering column isn't locked you can install a CLB

Yeah I told them yesterday not to install the part they wanted to charge me for, just what the recall requires. Will pick up the part from one of the suppliers and install it myself. Looks time consuming but not too difficult.....thanks for all the info.

It is a 99, M6. Going to orderthe part the the weekend. And I am only slightly mechnically inclined, but I am sure with help I can get it done right.
Thanks.....

OP you're in good hands. I don't know of anyone who knows more about the column lock issue than 8Vette7.

Good luck
