Default Strange Cruise Control problem

I have an 03, 50th avn vert. over the last few weeks I have noticed while going to and from work the cruise will just shut off. I get a cruise disconnected message and when I hit resume it resumes. mostly happens once and every now and then a second time. I have a 25 mile commute and it takes me about 40 minutes. Yesterday I drove it to see my parents, a 2 hour trip. About 30 minutes into my trip it did it again., and then again, and continued doing it about every 30 seconds until I gave up and turned it off. After about 20 minutes I tried it again. this time when it shut off I got a quick message that said traction control then cruise disconnected. Just for kicks I turned off the traction control and tried it again. No more problems for the rest of the trip.
On the return trip I tried it again. Same thing. It started about 20-30 minutes into the trip. This time it was dark and I noticed that the headlights dimmed just for a split second before the cruise disconneted message came on again. This happened 3 times before I turned off the traction control and then No more problems.
Today I pulled the codes and what I got was :

AO- LDCM
B2282 Battery #1 Fault
B2284 Battery #2 Fault
U1064 Loss of Communications with BCM

A1 - RDCM
B2283 Battery #1 Fault
B2285 Battery #2 Fault
U1064 Loss of Communications with BCM

all these codes were followed by an "H"

The car is all stock except for the Vararam cold I installed this am.

I would appreciate any help before I pull out all my hair
thanks

The symptom you are having is a failing SWPS (Steering Wheel Position Sensor) sensor. I had the same symptoms you are. Finally got a code for the SWPS. The error code may disappear once the ignition is turned off, so check the codes after an occurrence but before turning off the ignition.

Ordered one from I think GM Parts House. Had a buddy come over and we pulled the steering column out, changed the part and put it back together. No more cruse control issue. The part was about $70 and took about 2hrs to do.

There are a couple of write ups on the forum on how to do this.

Good info. Please update this thread when you find out the exact cause of your cruise control problems.

The only other thing I would check would be the brake switch relay.

I think Mr. Bill had the same problem -- don't know if he got it fixed....

Default Its the SWPS

with Silverc54me because I have exactly the same symptoms. I've researched this extensively and I'm 99% sure it's the SWPS. What your seeing is the symptom not the cause. The CC needs and input from the EBCM and you're getting a temporary interruption which is kicking the system off.

When you start getting the problem try to watch the DIC closely. I'd bet you're getting a very brief "active handling" warning on the DIC. The brief drop out is enough to disconnect the cruise control but not enough to set a code. With mine, the code doesn't set until I get the full AH drop out and the AH/TCS/service ABS warnings. When it comes it'll be a C1287 or C1288.

I just need to pluck up courage to pull the steering wheel.

DeeGee, it is about a 2.5 hr job to take the column out and replace the SWPS. I had previously taken apart the interior when I did a stereo install and LED mod. So, taking it apart to pull the column was easy. The key to the replacement is to not spin the steering wheel while taking it out and putting it back in.

well its official....I got the code this morning but only by checking codes before turning off the engine. Its the C1287 Steering Sensor Rate Malfunction. I called the dealership (since I bought an after market warranty) and it will be changed 1st thing monday morning. It will be well worth my 100$ deductable to not deal with it. Thanks for everyones help. This forum is great

I've looked at the How To so many times Gary. I'll do it one of these days. I fitted my own AVIC nav system so I guess it cant be that bad
