Ok, this has probably been a topic a million times, but it seems like the $60 chip that adds 50HP is kinda of fake or cheap from a real car lover's performance mod standpoint. I am curious to hear opinions though. Are these things legit? Safe? I'm not interested in them personally, just trying to understand the logic and how they work.

I think chips were/are for the older cars, 1980's and early 1990's if I understand.
On those, you could not rewrite the program, had to buy a new chip(or whatever part), but on our cars I think you can upload different programs with something like HP Tuners, or mail your ECM off to somebody to do it.
I have a book on TPI engine (the 1980's and early 1990's ones) and it talks about chips.

Waste of money to buy one of those chips. The C5 is not like the older cars where you could install a chip and get a bump in performance. You really need a tuner on these cars.
