For the couple of bucks they cost already turned, sanded, and with a pilot hole, it didn't seem necessary to reinvent the wheel (or wooden ball as it were ).
I would have liked a 2.5" Delrin ball, at least to try, but they don't seem to be generally available in individual quantities that I could find.

I've finally completed my A4 shift **** this weekend and it turned out pretty well I think.
All told, i did five coats of gloss black, three coats clearcoat, and finally three coats of polyurethene (with some sanding).
The finish is nearly mirror-like
It isn't a particularly difficult project and if you have any sort of artistic ability, I'm sure you could come up with something more sophisicated designwise using the basic fabrication proceedure.
A C5 wheel center sticker would look good on top. I put them on a pub table I made for the man cave. 3 coats of polyurethane and you can't feel them at all. Put them on after 3 coats and buried them in 3 more. Got them from the auction sire. They have 2 sizes. I got the large ones but the small one would fit better there. The polyurethane did not bother them at all. I used the spray kind.

That's a heckuva job if you used a spray, was it from a rattle can?? Hard to get a thick coat, especially on softwood.

Rattle can. 1 coat then light sand and then just heavy coats. I put on 3 then let it dry over night. Then I installed the stickers and put on 3 more heavy coats. The base is a rotor fro my sisters Jeep. The leg is 1" pipe with floor flanges on each end. The top is a $17 premade item. I welded the floor flange to the rotor and screwed the other to the top. The base is painted in hammertone black. Easy to make and cost about $50.

Nice job on the table! Kind of off your subject, but I noticed you have a Saturn Sky above your vette. I have a 2006 Solstice I want to store above the vette. What kind of lift to you use?

My apologies to going a bit off-off, but you mentioned Solstice. Check out the engine compartment of this one I saw last week:
Yes. Solstice was built to take a V8. My wife and I were in Detroit for the delivery of the first Solstice and visited with the engineers about it. Plans were to eventually have a factory V8. Mallet Motorsports did the conversions and the car is outrageous. Thanks for the photo. That is the first I have seen.

It's a Danmar D7X. The X is the larger one. It's working out real well.
