I have better luck finding my answers using Search Topics Only usually. It narrows it down a lot.
I posted about this in the help forum but didn't get any replies. I can get pretty creative also. Sometimes in a long thread I'll just search the thread again narrowing down what I'm looking for. It's on the far right at the top of the thread.
Using quote, as suggested before, doesn't seem to really just return phases in the quotes, it just looks for all the words. I use +whatever sometimes with some luck.
As mentioned, sometimes I can't find my own since I'm over 250 posts and as far as I can tell it's limited to that.
Yes I agree it's hard to find stuff on here , and it really Peevs me when some old boot, answers OH that's been answered 100 times before , DO A SHEARCH. not everybody is good at finding stuff on a computer.Be kind to the newbies . Ron

Thanks Ron. I'm a newbie (but car oldie) and it was exasperating at times when one would be taken to task, whether I did a search or not, it was assumed by whichever grouch responded that way that I hadn't.
I am sure that I am not the only one who finds the search engine in this forum makes it very hard to find what you are looking for. I have found if I just search Google with the same words I get straight to what I need in this forum.
This forum is great, I just find I can get what I need much easier by searching Google to get there.
Down side of doing that is that if you are logged into the forum, open another window to search via google, find a hit that you like and click on it you end up getting a session to the Forum that is not logged in and when you go back to your original window that was logged in you are now logged off.
I know what you mean...on my home page Yahoo there is a tool bar that keeps the other sites you go to so you can jumb back and forth. You may have to open another window from your browser. I know there are some real smart computer people who can answer this better than me on this forum. So when you do a search you don't loose your last site you were on.

There are a few here that seem to have no other contribution than to throw up the "DO A SEARCH" post. And if you start out saying you tried, they will be quick to tell you that you are a dummy that doesn't know how to do it right. If it bugs you so much, why not just hit the back button and ignore the question?
So what if it has been asked before? Maybe this time someone has a different approach. Perhaps things may have changed since that last thread. I have read a bunch of threads on the same subject after searching. Yes a lot of repetition but also sometimes you pick up a piece of info from different thread responces. So again, what does it hurt if it's been asked before?
I personally find it a bit more iritating when posts get burried because of all the vendor ad posts. But that's not my bussiness and someone has to pay the bills. Just saying a lot of repitition there too. But I digress.
As for searching..I have found that it helps if you use quotation marks. Such as " wheel spacers" Not sure why but it seems to narrow it down better.
I use the search, but I spend a lot of time reading things and still don't get what I'm looking for sometimes. It does perturb me how some always says SEARCH or use the dead horse. If they don't want to answer the question, just hit the back button. I recently bought a AFE filter setup and spent at least 10 hours searhing for info on it. Still haven't found all the answers. I'll ask one of these days, and get the dead horse.

Fender, in the early days of search engines, using quotes was one of the ways to limit a search to that exact phrase. Used to use Boolean logic as well, but the modern search engines don't seem to care. Seems like quotes still work somewhat.
YES, everyone knows post count dictates expertise.
Almost every auto/motorcycle forum I've been on has this function. Some are better than other but learning how to use them not only saves the poster a lot of time but keeps redundant noise out of the forum making the search results BETTER!

And for those that like horses:
No argument here, just speaking to the assumptions made earlier.
OK so in defence of who ever started this , can one of you very knowledgable people post instructons on doing a search or is this going to end with nobody learning anything! Without being sarcarstic of course
and for my knowledge too.
Search for Dummies. kind of thing
Ron
Ron Rail. use advance search but change "Sort Results By" from "Last Posting Date" to "Relevancy".
That has helped me with finding things on here. Hope it helps.
