Default Switchback load resistor problem!

Anyone else have problems with the LED load resistors getting so hot that they melt the solder that holds the wires on the end of the resistors? I read that they got hot but I'm pretty sure this is not normal. I thought I may have got a bad set, contacted the vendor and he sent me another set, they did the exact same thing after 20 min! Now I'm being told I need to purchase the 60 dollar hyper flash harness..... Anyone else had this issue?

Have not had that experience but can see why its happening. As I'm sure you know, the lighting circuit looks at the low draw of the LED's, thinks the bulb is blown and flashes the signal faster (hyperflash). The resistor added causes the circuit to need more current to work, no hyperflash. Either the circuit needs the power or it doesn't, if we insert a resistor to artificially draw more current, its gotta go somewhere so its lost as heat.

Ive seen posts stating that resistors placed in line for led conversions get hot, real hot. I have the switchbacks and the hyperflash adapter (flasher bypass) and everything works fine for years. I never really took the panel off and felt the hyperflash adapter so it might be hot, but as I said ....no problems thus far.

You might want to consider:

A) Leaving the resistors out, letting it flash faster and dealing with a little less bulb life (the on and off cycle is the most wear any bulb goes through).

or

B) Just adding the flasher bypass.

Route B also frees you from the possibility of the OEM flasher (which is behind the hazard switch in the center of the dash, and is a pain to get at to replace) going south as it bypasses that portion of the circuit.

FYI the bypass is a ten minute install, drop the panel under the steering wheel (three screws), plug it in and close it back up.

Good luck

Thanks for the feedback, I guess my question should have been, If a hyper flash harness is needed to cure this problem why do they advertise and give you the option to add the resistors to you switchback order as a cure? Or am I the only one that has experienced this problem?

Take the resistors out and install the hyperflash module instead. Problem solved.
I went that route from day one and never had any issues.

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one that has had this issue!

I'd advise to think before you type. Comments removed.
