These really are not true Corvette prototypes. They are nothing more then composite body panels designed to fit on three different chassis. If they were true Corvette prototypes they would have been on a specially designed chassis. This is just a typical NASCAR event that has team run a specific motor(i.e. Ford, Chevy or BMW) they select the chassis and the body work and that is it.
been watching it on and off. Saw the 1st 3 hours yesterday and how the Suntrust Corvette P1 totaly bombed out. I dont even think it made it through 1 lap before it had to pit. Then, it got back out there, had vibrations above 5K rpm's and then back in. Meanwhile, the Red Corvette was leading the packand The Porsches were dominating the GT Class as usual.
I love the nightime racing in these events and last time I checked last night the the 90 Car Corvette was doing very well also. I am about to turn it back on
I wondered why the "Corvettes" weren't really actual Corvettes. It seems like they only carried over the tail lights and emblem decals.
These are what are known as Daytona Prototype cars. they are not based on a production type car. The use either a Ford, BMW or Chevy engine and then there are different chassis manufacturers, non of which are associated with a any of the name brand car manufacturers.
This so called Corvette is nothing more then body panels supplied by Pratt & Miller to fit three different chassis. They do however look like a Corvette from the front as well as the sides have the C6 style coves and the rear tail lights.
The Grand Am is a NASCAR event and they want the DP cars to try and carry the street car look although it appears that the Chevy engine cars are the only ones that have done so. Not sure if it was mandated or suggested, but I heard Jimmy Johnson say that their 2013 Chevy will look like the street car, so I guess maybe it is a 2013 requirement. I am not a follower of this series so maybe someone that follows it more will have that answer.
Question is where are the C6.R's, thought they were racing the GT series here, did they get bumped out / wrecked?
Wrong series. The C6R's race in the ALMS series. There was one lone Corvette in the GT class, but it is a totally different series. This is a NASCAR road racing series.
