What does 'yellow clearcoat' mean? Is that a special clear coat with yellow in it???

Default Yellow Clear Coat

I will try and find post i got this info from. The MY was painted at factory with a white primer. Both Arctic White and Millennium Yellow used the white primer. The Millennium Yellow paint has a yellow-tinted clearcoat to simulate the hot glow of molten sulfur. If I can find post I will let you know.
I did use PPG correct MY paint on my fenders. Did not use white primer and used a clearcoat that was not tinted. Although it was close there was no way it matched 100%. Possibly the tinted clearcoat was my issue. I did take to professional body shop and he did match color very well. He also did not use a tinted clearcoat but job came out good.
Hope this helps some.

Not sure but im guessing ....1st step is a white primer.2nd step is a yellow paint. 3rd step is a clearcoat tinted yellow.

I had an accident repair done by Corvettes of Auburn and the match was perfect to my eyes. It was a major hassle getting it through the insurance company due to the process - my understanding is that it is basically a white base coat with multiple colored clear on top. Give them a buzz and they can give you the details

No don't do that they match it mine are perfect. Mill yellow is funny in the sun everywhere there is a bend the paint looks different.

I bought a can of MY spray paint from the Chevy dealer to paint my license plate frame. Used a standard gray primer and then 5 coats of the MY, followed by 3 coats of clear.

It's not perfect, but it's close enough for me.

Just got back from a body shop to get a quote for repainting my 2000 vert trunk lid which is (and has always been since I bought the car (I guess it had been replaced at some point)) a slightly darker shade of yellow. He pulled the paint code (there's 2 MY codes for the 2000 model year) and while his samples matched the darker yellow on the trunk lid fairly well, the rest of the car was WAY lighter (more white in the paint, as he put it).

$500 to paint the trunk lid without a guarantee that it'll match (best effort with computer matching), $1000 to also paint (and blend) the fenders and top lid.

I thought at first I picked a crappy body shop (even though it came highly recommended), but it sounds like a common problem with this color...

If it were me, I'd want the surround to match as best as possible to the front fascia. Spend the extra to get it right IMO.

I, too, bought the rattle can from paintscratch.com to paint the surround on my '02 MY coupe. First sprayed it with primer, followed by white base coat (why? Cause someone on the Forum mentioned I should.) Matched pretty well.

Then last week I went and crunched the bumper and right front quarter panel (and the surround) on a brick wall. Just had the new parts painted Tuesday. The PPG rep delivered MY for my car (which matched the code we got by cross-referencng my VIN). Paint didn't match - too "velocity yellow" and not enough "yellow gold" (my descriptions).

PPG guy said "oh, there are two different MY yellows, one of which has a bit more tint than the other." But both of which match the '02 paint code!!!! PPG guy sent the correct MY to my body shop guy, and we sprayed again yesterday. Viola - perfect match.

In either case, however, we had to apply a white base coat over the primer (why? cause the PPG guy said to.), then sprayed three passes of the MY followed by three passes at clear coat before the paint matched.

So...be forwarned. Use the white base coat, and be sure to get the "right" MY for your car. Don't trust the VIN or paint code, cause it might not be the correct MY.

There must be 2 different MY's. I have seen another C5 at a dealership and parked next to it. It's obvious that this one was a bit darker than my car. Almost like a tinted coat.

MY is a three step paint. Yellow base, then a tint, then the clear coat. The tint is some sort of fluorescing material that gives MY it's look that it has lights in it. Apply the yellow over a #2 gray base. The gray gives a little blue note to the yellow.

I bought a pint of the yellow from my local auto paint store. They looked it up in the book and mixed it there. Also had them mix a rattle can of it. Had my hood shot, and it matches perfectly! I used the rattle can to paint my surround. It originally was black, but I primed, painted, and clear coated it and it matches very well.

Blending the paint fender to other body parts

not paint the fender the put it on and expect it to be a perfect match

I had my aftermarket hood painted. Color matched perfectly out in bright sunlight. But when it is cloudy outside or I get under HID lighting it turns a bit greener that the rest of the car.

Bought mine and I could tell right off the bat some of the body had been painted. Never liked that green tint . RK5 hood added so repainted the whole car and told the guy if I saw one hint of green he was doing it again and could he fix that. .
Don't know the first thing about matching paint but he told me he added three shots of red instead of one and it made the car darker yellow. No green tint what so ever. Love it but its not MY any more.
He mentioned MY was a pain in the butt to match. Chevy dealership painted mine.
