Default 6M trans issue

Hey all,

I was on my way home a couple hours ago and went to pull away from a light and heard/felt a clunk. Thought lady behine me hit me but she didnt.

Goes into all gears but will not move. I had it towed to a friends trans shop. Seems to be leaking a small amount of gear lube.

Any ideas what it may have been?

As always, I appareciate any and all responses.

Sorry for the slang....... It sounds like your differential is broken and the gear oil may indicate a cracked housing.

Only way to know is to have the transmission shop of your choice put it up on a lift and inspect the damage. All of us guessing doesn't mean anything, until you have eyes on it.

Had you resently been making jack rapid take offs?
If so, had you heard a loud thumping noise coming up through the floor of the car? (rear/tranny hopping)(wheel hopping)
As stated, you possibly cracked the differential case ,or/and broke
a short shaft coming out of the differential or possibly the ring/pinion of the differential.
By seeing dark heavy gear oil, Not red indicates that it's the rear not the tranny.
If your tranny friend is not familiar with the C/5 tranny/differential, I suggest taking your car to a shop that does that kind of work on C/5's all the time.
Good luck.

Ok, I have had it 3 weeks and the one time that I did realy get on it, yes I heard a thumping noise. Today I was gently pulling away from a light and it just "broke"

It dripped some gear oil on the roll back wrecker. The shop it is at is a big trans shop here in FW. I would think they could fix it but i am open to taking it elsewhere, just do not know where

Though unusual, it is a part that can be replace rather quickly and without much fanfare. You will be back on the road in no time.

Am I to be on the lookout for a rear "center section" or just replace broken parts?

It'll be cheaper if you can find a good quality 3.42 complete pumpkin for sale. Fixing your existing takes someone who is truly an expert on the C5/C6 rear end. It's unlike any other rear end - even the local shop here "Rear End Specialists" said sorry, take it somewhere else. Also, it sounds like you may have a cracked housing which would pretty much make it unrepairable.

I should have one for sale next week for $600. It only has 12k miles on it and no abuse.

I just got back from Trans shop. They were pushing it into a bay and it left a trail of diff fluid. They assured me they could handle the job.

I am most likely a buyer on a center section but need one now. My backup car is a 27 Ford sedan hotrod and I am supposed to sell it in a few days. Backup to that is a dirt bike with a license plate on it. UGH

The shop called and told me the rear diff housing is broken. Toast.

Also the tail housing on trans is broken. Hopefully trans can be saved by replacing that part.

How the hell do these parts break by simply pulling away from a red light???

I am feeling like I bought the wrong car.

I'm no expert, but it seems it didn't break from pulling away from a red light "one time". Posssibly the car was driven hard by the previous owner?

Usually breaks from wheel hoping. You may have not done it much but i would bet the previous owner experienced plenty of wheel hop fatiguing the whole rear drive end.

Since I have had this damn thing only 3 weeks, I am inclined to beleive you guys in regards to previous owner being the one who dogged it.

So, since I am married to it, how do I make sure this never happens again?

Avoid "wheel hop" at all cost. It can do some real damage to mounts trannys and diffs.....pretty much as you are figuring out.

Good Luck and keep us posted.
