It's really getting stupid. Our own oil companies are exporting more oil than we're importing which is driving up the price. Basically the American consumer is subsidizing the growth in China and other countries.
This has nothing to do with any perceived shortages or tensions in the Middle East. It's perception and market speculators. If I was the CEO of a major oil company I would love the Iranian saber rattling because I just sold my product for a 20% premium vs. one month ago!
I have to drive cross country in May. It'll probably $5 by then.
Oh well, it's still cheaper than an airline ticket and I get to spend quality time with the vette!

I agree they are making huge profits. It is not all the speculators though, the price of gas went up about 50 cents this week, but the NYMEX futures (CME group RBOB web site) shows there was only about 10 cents rise in the last few weeks.
In fact the April through next year futures show a decline in pricing. If it were the speculators only, those prices should reflect the price increases that all the media is suggesting will happen. The futures which are what the commodity speculators trade don't show these big increases. Someone is making billions, but I am not sure who it is, and the media is tied into it to "sell" it to the public that it will happen.
Do you think that voting out the current crop of politicos will solve the problem? I seem to remember in the GOP years of the last administration, we went through the same exhorbitant costs for fuel. What we need is the government to put tighter controls on the speculators that are screwing us royally. I don't see any politician in or out of office who has the guts to deal with the sob's. Oh, you say that's free enterprise?? I call it theft.

I thought about your question and it seems we can do the following as a nation:
1. Find, promote, and use alternative fuel sources--and fight an ever increasing battle against oil companies.
2. Drill America for our own oil source-not really a guarantee that American oil companies will share their profits with consumers in the price of gas...plus a serious political debate, that will cost our government more money to come to some decision.
3. Find a way to manipulate the OPEC nations to lower the price of the barrel, something I really don't see happening.
4. Accept it. Something I really don't want to.
5. Design the first nuclear powered corvette . --oh wait that's the same as number 1.
