Having been to oval and ALMS races over the years, the ALMS cars are so much more fun to check out and watch running on the track steering both ways -- but the racing tends to be better on oval tracks. I think Nascar should line up Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Genesis Coupes, BMW 3-series, and any other RWD sport coupes you can think of, get them roughly weight and HP equal, minimize aero, and let them go at it. Back in the day the Nascar racers were all 2-door, near-stock sheet metal and built on stock frames with cages, and had somewhat sporty "muscle car" roots, so why not?

I can see both sides of the "race-in-the-rain" issue. I like to watch the F-1 and ALMS guys go in the rain (on TV) as it really brings out driver talent, but as I only get to about one race a year in person I kinda like to know I won't be in a slicker under an umbrella....

You must have been a Dick Allen fan back in the day:

I agree. I haven't watched NASCAR since they stopped using "real" cars. I remember the great races, and great drivers from back in the 1960's and 70's. Remember when drivers actually built and owned their own cars. Not much of a race these days when all the cars look alike and are built in the same shops. NASCAR should go back to the old concept of taking a car off the showroom, beef up the suspension, put in a roll cage, tune the engine, put on a set of headers and go racing.

I am not a NASCAR fan and I normally don't even turn it on. If you don't turn left and right, then it ain't racing. I did however watch this years race because I understood that they had fixed the two car tag along from last year and I do enjoy the two super speedway races. I don't watch hoping to see a big crash, but I will admit that as long as there is pack racing it is exciting to watch.
I have also read through most of these comments and there are some that simply amaze me, like the one about Danica buying her points and that there were 49 other drivers in the race that did not buy their point. Actually she did not buy her points, this is common in NASCAR to used the owners points from last year with a new driver. Also last time I checked there were only 43 drivers in the race.
Also the statement "make them run STOCK sheet metal!! Last years race with them paired up and changing the lead constantly was MUCH better.". NASCAR made the change to stop the two car tag along because the majority of the fans were up in arms about it, oh and by the way last years cars were of the same one size fits all that they have been since the CoT came in. "If they did that,,Dodge might actually make the Charger LOOK like a car that could go fast and get rid of that barn door front end" The rules that NASCAR has, makes no difference on now Dodge designs their cars, because of the one size fits all rule that NASCAR presently uses. That is going to chance next year as NASCAR wants the different makes to be based on their street production cars. Much like it once was. If you look at the dodge line up of vehicles they all look the same, so it is not NASCAR that is driving the design.

Counting the drivers that weren't fast enough to qualify and could not buy there points from another team like DP did there were 49.

I agree -- one of my earliest baseball memories was watching him launch a ball over the roof atop the left-field bleachers at Connie Mack.

He did prefer to be called "Dick" though...Philly sportswriters were such jerks back then he actually took grief for stating that!
