Default Tire pairing question.

Can't find the answer to this via the search or through Google but in regards to pairing up front and rear tires.. I have 275-40zr17 98Y and need to replace the rear tires which are 295-35zr18 99Y. The set is Michelin Pilot Sport, and pretty old. I have a set for the rear available for a good price, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus 275-40 18 ZP99Y. They are from a very reputable shop up here and he says they will work just fine. From what I have read though, the rear tires always seem to be wider then the fronts. Is this gospel or will these be fine on my '99 Vert? The car has the Active Handling option as well if that makes a difference.

appears the set you presently have were oversized both front and rear. Stock front is 245/45-17 and rear is 275/40-18, so dealer is selling you stock size for your 1999.

your C5 came from the factory with 245/45/17 in the front, and 275/40/18 in the rear. To keep your handling system from acting up you need to keep this (or close) stagger.
These sizes have a diameter of 25.7 in front and 26.7 in rear. You can decrease the stager to .5in. The width can be changed (limited to rim width and wheel well size) with no problem.
Hope this helps

So I can run the 275's front and 275's back no problem or are you saying it may be an issue and I need to go back to a 285 or 295 in the rear? The front tires are recent with little wear.

Yes, you will be OK with your current front tires, because 275/40 is the same diameter as the correct tire, 245/45. Might get better handling with the stock size on the front when you replace them.

Um. I forgot to mention. They aren't stock C5 Wagonwheel rims, they are Z06 sized rims.

Then, they are an inch wider than the stock rims, and those tires will be a bit narrow for them. They may fit...or they may not, I don't know, but they won't be right.

Looked at the Tire Rack website and they show the rim range for a Michelin Pilot Sport 275/40/18 to be 9-11". Your Z06 rims are 10.5' so you should be OK.

Thanks Phil. I ended up calling the GM / Corvette dealer in Toronto and spoke to the parts Mgr. He agreed that there would be no issue at all running them on the back. I should never have questioned Alan at Simply Tire and his recommendation.
It's all good, now to take a run down the highway tomorrow and have them installed.
