Default Engine Temp at idle

So last night I come in the driveway and get out of my Vette to get the mail. Took about five minutes to get the mail and got back into the car and noticed the temp guage up to 230 deg. Is this a normal temp when idleing for awhile?
The outside temp was 38 deg. When I revved the car for a few seconds the temp went down to 220 deg where it usually stays. Is my water pump starting to go away? Is a coolant fan not working? Guess I need to check it out but I just thought I would ask you guys what experiences you have had.
My Vette is a 04 C5Z with 14,900 miles. Other than this issue it runs GREAT. Thanks for any input.

Fred

normal, stock they can get a little toasty when sitting, sometimes they mod the fans to come On a little early from stock settings...fist time mine did it I freaked out, not used to cars running that warm and being ok.

Mine never gets that high. But to be fair, the fans are turned on at a lower temp in the ECU. I suggest doing the same.

Mine used to routinely hit 23x temps (albeit at higher ambient than 38 F). But after having the fan temps adjusted, I'm pretty steady around 200.

Only seem mine spike like that one time- the day I drove it home to FL from Alabama. I was in traffic in some small town and I saw my temps go to around 225 real quick. As soon as I started rolling, she cooled right down and never spiked like that again. I now have a 160 thermostat installed with the fans set to 180. Temps never go over 185 tops.

Check the area between the radiator and the shroud for any debris that could be blocking airflow.

Thanks guys. I will take the advice and will check for blockage and look into setting the fan toggle to 180 deg. It gets hot in summer here in NC.

Oh yeah, definitely do that first. In fact, go over the entire radiator with a stiff-bristled brush.

Also, check this thread: forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-z06/radiator-mod-for-more-efficient-cooling

I'm pretty sure the stock thermostat is 190, so the lowest you'll want to set the fan is ~195, else it will just constantly run.
