I just picked up my 04 z06 from having new tires installed and road force balanced. I was unpleasantly surprised to see that they installed wheel weights on the outside, though I guess it's my fault for not asking in advance.
Whend I STFFM, I found some conflicting information, wondering if you can help:
1) Is it possible to road force balance without using outside wheel weights?
2) Is it common for others getting road force balancing to show up with outside weights?
I'm not sure how much this is going to bother me, but don't want to sound like an idiot if I call these guys up to ask them about it.
Both sets of wheels I have for my car have been road force balanced and the weights are on the inside. I would take it back to whoever did it and make them change the weights to the inside.
Discount Tire here in Washington has removed all their equipment, saying it was no better than regular balancing.
That's Bull$hit !!!!
Done properly, Road Force matching significantly reduces R1H - Radial First Harmonic - vibration. There is no BALANCING method that can correct a R1H vibration.
To the OP, a good shop does not need to place weights on the outside of your wheels. Take it back to the shop and have them correctly mount the weights, or have them refund your money.
This is interesting. I was looking to get the womans mustang wheels high speed road balanced.
I have had several sets done when discount tire used to offer this and they were perfectly smooth up to very high speeds. We moved to a small town without this option and her car even after balancing has an annoying high speed vibration. I am trying to hunt down a shop that still does this in BC and see if it fixes the problem.
Ive had a couple of vehicles (BMW 525i & a 92ZR-1) where road force balancing was the only way to cure a high speed vibration problem. We tried everything from rotating the tire on the rim to using different types of weights.... the ONLY thing that worked was RFB.

I think you made the right decision getting it corrected. I picked up my 04 Vert yesterday after 4 tires mounted and balanced. Like you, I had weights on the outside (looked like crap) and questioned the service writer. Claimed with RFB they had to put them on outside. After some checking (found out weights can be placed on inside just more work) and disliking the look more and more I called back and have an appointment to have them moved inside. It seems kind of petty but better to get it taken care of because like you I was not sure how much this was going to bother me.
