Holy crap.
I had that happen to me once with firestones on my 77 Z28. But of course it didn't do that kind of damage. it did scar up the rear quarter from the wires slapping though.

i've been thinking of sending them a nice little letter that goes something along the lines of
"me and my family own a small business, that operates 15(or 18, im not going outside to count right now), 6 trucks, one of them being a topkick deuce and a half wrecker, until this catastrophic failure of your tire, i had every faith in your company, and was a very loyal customer, however seing as your tires will blow out under such dainty load as a 3 thousand and some odd pound corvette, how can i trust them to ensure the safety of my employee's, customers, and equipment with 25,000-30,000 pound combined loads??" what ya'll think?

If your tpms wasn't working properly like you stated earlier.
And if the tire had low or no air pressure.
And you've been driving at higher speeds than a flat Michelin runflat can handle.
And you perhaps drove more miles than a flat Michelin runflat can handle, what would you expect?
Looks to me like it could be your fault, not the tires fault.
Good thing is, no one was hurt and the car can be fixed.

so me and my dad have been tossing ideas around. what he thinks happened was that the air pressure got low, and we didn't notice, bc A.) they were run flats, and B.) because my wheel speed sensors, and pressure monitors have been very intermittent. i don't know how much you would notice low air pressure on run flats. it had some really odd wear on the outside edges.

In the second picture, that tire looks completly bald! Sucks that you had a blowout but you probably ran something over without knowing it. Did the low tire pressure warning come up on the dash?

the tread looked fine, they where on it when i got them so not sure about mileage, and yea the tread came of as one single piece.
i went back and found the tread the next morning. it came apart right at a little diagonal seam where i assume they put it together..?
yea other than my active handling going ape $h!1 and trying to drag me to the left no problems slowing down, i just coasted to a stop. Didnt wanna nail the brakes, not knowing what kind of traction i had

A lot of owners only see the outside edge of the rear tires and never really put eyeballs on the center of them, which is a BIG NO-NO. When I first bought my car and looked at the outside, I could see it had plenty of tread depth. Sadly, later that week I had the car up and ACTUALLY looked at them and saw steel belts in the center of the tires! Lucky I didn't have a blow out. Bought 2 rear tires immediately in the first 3 days of ownership! Better to be safe than sorry.......check your tires completely!
just to make everyone happy here's the tread
and my low air pressure theory is out the door, i must have imagined the wear on the edges that night, must have been a shadow or something....

That looks like some pretty seriors cupping on the edges, but that could be because the tread blew off the tire. This happens sometimes, I would contact the tire manfacturer, which you should be able to do thru any good dealer. Good luck.

Sorry for your bad luck!
After purchasing my Corvette I drove 200 miles at 70 mph+. Thought it was pulling. Checked air pressure. 5 psi! Never can tell on a run flat.
I have had great luck with Michilin. Keep us up to date.
Good Luck!

The center wear indicates over-inflation, or hard acceleration
(I would guess the latter) according to the Corvette shop manual.
Same wear I had on mine, 25,000+ miles. Actually my center tread
was slightly more worn than yours.
Mine was admittedly from hard acceleration.
The gas pedal is like crack!!!!!!!!!!

I've been watching this thread and thinking about what could have happened. I'm thinking heat. I once bought a car that had been in an accident where the driver had locked up the brakes pretty hard before a minor impact. Even though the tires looked fairly new, every one of the tires failed catastrophically, like yours. This isn't to say that they should fail like that just because you smoke them once in awhile, after all, why do we pay a premium price for good tires? But I think heat caused the delamination.

Been driving since 1964 and like many others I've never seen a passenger car tire separate like that. Retreads yes, but an OEM tire, never. If that is the right mfg. date, you need to contact Michelin for sure. and don't be shy about your complaint.
