Default #%$% Column Lock Bypass...I'm selling!!

Ok, I experienced the Column Lock Bypass, Pull key and wait 10 seconds issue for the second time and took my 99 FRC to the dealership to have it fixed. The first time they installed a bypass relay, this second time they said it was chaffed wire that caused it. They replaced the wired and all was well driving it home. I drove the car a week later, this past weekend, to clean and detail the car and fill it up with gas. I drove it home, parked a few minutes and the column lock bypass issue happened again. I can move my steering when fine, but I couldn't go past 2 miles per hour. So creeped back into my garage. Very very dissapointed, and disgusted because it ruined my plans for the night and I just spent $$ on fixing this problem AGAIN. While at the shop, I learned this happened three times to the previous owner per GM's records.

My mind is made up on selling but...before I commit to selling my car, I need to know if there is anything I can do to fix the Column Lock Bypass issue to where it won't happen so often.

There is literally a ton of information on this issue - you might want to check this link....

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...ky-please.html

The problem can be resolved, just not by your local Chevrolet dealer's service department. They really don't want to work on old cars, the recall campaign is long over. I have to admit it is frustrating, but to sell the car over something that can be resolved is a little over dramatic.

Knowledge is power - read the link and then decide what you want to do.

Did you have your doors open for a long period of time while you were detailing it? You may have a battery issue.

BLACKSEDAN87 - I have been reading about this issue for the last two years. I also installed the CLB last year and the issue repeated after the first time I took it to the dealership.

87SAM - The dealership had me replace my Optima Red Top battery with a new unit. The old one was less than a year old so it was still under warranty. I kept the doors closed and only detailed the exterior. I didn't get around to doing the interior. I leterally took a quick drive up the street in my neighborhood and back home.

I'll try the LMC5 unit. It seems to atleast get rid of the 2mph issue. Where can I purchase one? I'm still leaning towards selling because of the issues involved. I'll never have 100% trust in my car since I'll never know when it'll repeat and leave me stranded.

In C5 Tech, use search this forum (in the red banner) with keywords "lmc5".

Look for the thread from COMPLIANCE PARTS. They're the manufacturer. They may have distributors.

I found and purchased the LMC5 unit from ebay. Hopefully it works. I'm still on the fence whether I will sell the car or not and will let all interested parties know as soon as I make a final decision. I'll have to contend with the fact that I won't have a car to take around VIR if I sell it. Thanks everyone, I'll post the results of installing the LMC5 unit to this thread for other folks suffering from the same issues to review.

Unfortunately, mine did not work. I was not having problems ( I have had a CLB for several years) and installed it as preventive maintenance. After installation this weekend, I had the "pull key...", "service column lock" and 2 mph shutoff. I rechecked the installation, could find nothing wrong, and finally removed the LMC5 so I could drive the car. I have a fully charged new Delco battery with the required 120RC. Everything returned to normal with the LMC5 removed. I guess I violated the "if is ain't broke, don't fix it rule". I have sent an email to compliance parts and am waiting to hear back what the problem may be. I guess anything can be defective and I am sure they will make it good but I will be nervous to think about installing it again. My car is very low mileage and has left me stranded before (prior to installing the CLB) so I have to agree it is a car that in the back of your mind is hard to trust. I also have a C6 and never think twice about reliability.

You could have a tuner permanently unlock your steering column via HP Tuners and the problem will never happen. My car doesn’t sit unattended for long periods of time so when I was having a clutch installed the shop did that.

Not sure I’ll have to ask them. I need to go back there next week so I’ll ask him and shoot you a PM on my findings.

How the subject got brought up was my car had the recall preformed on it and my understanding from reading on here is that the recall won't work on the M12 cars plus the CLB will not work with the recall in place. Talking to the tuner he said the CLB is not a 100% guarantee that you won't experience column lock in the future. That's when he brought up fixing it with HP Tuners. I sure hope he is right.

Pretty sure me meant he could get rid of the 2mph fuel cutoff issue not the column locking.

Default No more fuel cut-off (2mph)

HP Tuners and set the fuel Cut-off to 255 mph ! can be done by a tuner or via mail order tune. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-s...nly-149-a.html

I like the LMC5 and have one on my car. But, I'm having someone reprogram the fuel shutoff to a higher mph so I wont be stuck at 2mph should something happen to the LMC5. Only then will I feel like I have laid the column lock issue to rest.

Another vote for LMC5, Richard went above and beyond in helping me. I was stuck at work yesterday, wheel unlocks, but I was getting pull key wait 10 seconds and service column lock message on the DIC. The battery is a relatively new optima red top and the car is daily driven. Anyways, tried everything under the sun, disconnecting the battery, pulling #25 etc, no dice. I tried the fast idle approach that Richard recommended and that worked, got me home. My kit should be here today or tomorrow. I will be going ahead and cleaning grounds, pulling codes and testing the battery as well. I am guessing the Texas heat last Summer really took its toll on this battery.

Most tuners just turn off that parameter now.
