I want to know if anyone on here has used sylvania bright white bulbs before . I want to upgrade but really dont want to do the HID headlights , just looking for something a little brighter. I have heard that they are not good to use because they cause the wire harness to melt. Anyone have any information on this would be a great help before I go and buy something that I cant use. Thanks CF members for your input.
I have used the Silver Stars Ultra, They are a bit better than stock, Another option is the Toshiba HIR bulbs.
Mr.Bill
+1 Toshiba HIR bulbs are the brightest halogen bulbs you can get using the factory wattage. They are around the same cost as HID, but you don't run into the legal and optical issues surrounding HIDs in the factory housings.
I did a search on Fleabay, got the part number,PHILIPS 9011/HIR1 X 2 BULBS C1 12V 65W PX20D COMPATIBLE TOSHIBA LOW/HIGH BEAM OE, did a compatability search, and comes up*This part is not compatible with 2002 Chevrolet Corvette * is this a big deal or not matter at all ? Apparently Toshiba doesn t make them anymore, but Philips does.
When replacing headlight bulbs with these newer/brighter models, are you only replacing the high beam lights? Or should you replace both the low beam and high beam with new bulbs? And while researching this topic, I found that Toshiba no longer makes the HIR bulbs. The article I read said that Toshiba stopped making HIRs in late 2009 are now made by Phillips, but now its a "Gen III" model (better?).

Mr. Bill, did I read that (with some trimming of course) you can use the HIR hi-beam (9011) in the standard low beam housing on the C5, and that, while brighter, it is still aimed low so it doesn't blind on-coming cars? If thats so, wouldn't the best combination be 4 9011 bulbs and use that in conjunction with radioflyers HI-LO cable to have all 4 lights on when on high beams, and just the two 9011s aimed low when on low beams? Did that even make any sense? Thanks for your patience mon capitan...

this is true. The 9005 and 9006 bulb base differ based on the top tab of the light. Cut it one direction it fits the 9006 (low beam side) cut the other direction and it fits the 9005 (high beam) side. If i remember, the HIR low and high beam have the same mounting points from the factory and can be shimmed to fit either one. The primary difference is the low beam HIR bulb has an anti-glare coating on the front portion of the bulb and the high beam does not. I don't know how much extra light the high beam HIR will get you, but it is possible to make it fit.
