two hints
1. Open the driver's door and put left foot on the floor - will get you closer to the roof..............remember to lift your foot as you step back!!!!
2. Keep one or other of the rear locating pegs engaged until you have a good grip on the roof and are ready to lift

My Process for removing the top and storing it is the hatch area:
Read instructions completely before attempting to take targa top off.
1. Pop rear hatch, make sure locking pins for top are retracted and leave the hatch open.
2. Put on gloves as needed that you previously stored in rear hatch compartment.
3. Roll down both windows and open driver door.
4. Unlock or Pop latches on top.
5. Standing on driverside of car, take right hand and push up underneath the front of the top. Use left hand to support front of the top out of the frame. While holding the front of the top with the rear pins still engaged use your right hand from underneath to guide the top forward and off rear pins. Lift the top off flat. Step back carrying away from the car with your top in your arms.
6. At this point you can easily lower top and get your right hand on rear edge of top. Swing front of top counterclockwise to your belly. Approach your opened hatch and lower the rear of top (or the part your holding with your right hand) into the pin blocks in the hatch area. They should slide right in place. Lower the front of the hatch with your left hand into its cradle position and use the locking pin arms to hold the top in place. Sometimes you have to wiggle the top a little to align the pins with the holes in the top.
7. Done - close hatch and enjoy your ride!
Installing can be a little tricky for the first few times if the top hasn't been off much. It's difficult to locate the rear top pins sometimes until broken in. Have someone help you reinstall the top if you top hasn't been off very much until your more comfortable with locating those pins. I was able to do this by myself until broken in but, I had to be real careful and it took a couple of minute to align it at times.
Now, it just slides right in the first time. My top has been off-on about 20-25 times. I do not believe the original owner every took the top off.
