Today I was pulled over for DWIC. Have you ever been accused? It's "D"riving "W"hile "I"n "C"orvette. I was sitting at 24th Ave S.E. and Alameda, at the stoplight headed south on my way to work after dropping my son off. There was a Red Volkswagon Jetta next to me. There was a NPD (Norman Police Department) patrol car directly behind her. The light changed, I left, the Jetta sat there (she was texting). I got across the intersection, looked in my mirror to make sure I was clear for a lane change, and signaled. As I was looking in the mirror, I saw the Jetta's headlights dim (I guess she panicked and killed her car when she realized the light wasn't getting any greener, her lights were dimming because she was starting her car), and at the same moment, I saw the NPD go around her (there were others as well).
Now for those of you not privy to this, you can get an optional HUD (heads up display) on Corvettes which mine has. It shows your SPEED ON YOUR WINDSHIELD so there is NO doubt to how fast you are going. After getting through the intersection and getting my speed to 44 mph, I SET MY CRUISE CONTROL (speed limit was 40 mph). He (NPD patrol car) runs up on my *** and LIGHTS ME UP. I pull over, wait for him to come to the window to find out what I was pulled over for, and he informs me I WAS GOING 54 MPH IN A 40 AS I CROSSED THE INTERSECTION. I take issue with his sanity, he takes my license and insurance back to his car.

Now here's the thing:

1. I NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER, got over 44 mph. I was WATCHING MY HUD!

2. How did Deputy Fife clock me in the intersection IF HE WAS STUCK BEHIND ANOTHER CAR WHILE I WAS "ALLEGEDLY SPEEDING" THROUGH THE INTERSECTION?

And finally,

3. IF I WAS DOING 14 MPH OVER THE SPEED LIMIT, WHY DID I GET A WRITTEN WARNING AND NOT A TICKET?

I pay a LOT of taxes here in Norman, and I can only hope there are better examples of law enforcement out there than this guy. BTW, as I pull back out on 24th, a Gray Mazda 3 passes me in a NO PASSING ZONE (I'm going 38 in a 40, I estimate his speed at 60, and he was going this speed AS HE WENT PAST THE NPD OFFICER WHO TURNED RIGHT BEHIND ME ON THE SAME ROAD. AND HE DIDN'T GET PULLED OVER.

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT?

Hmmmmmmmmmm, actually 1 mile over speed is enough to get a ticket.
Most LEO'S give 5 to 10.

Ya got a warning ticket, here in SC, ya got to get something to satisfy the racial profiling people, so it's either a ticket or a warning, be happy.

INSTANT ticket, " hey buddy, ya know my taxes pay your salary"

smile it's over....................

What does paying a lot of taxes have to do with getting pulled over anyway?

I just paid $1000 in school taxes and I never had and never will have kids. But that's a different rant.

Frankly, can't understand why you even posted this. All I got out of this is that there is one LEO in Norman who decided to pull you over for a warning - if it was just to admire your car then it was an inconsiderate act at best and shame on the officer. We'll never know why you were pulled over until we hear the LEO's side of the story which I doubt will happen.

However, if you run a business that sells to these guys then I would have never mentioned it, much less disrespect him by calling him Deputy Fife, much-much less post it on a Facebook account as well as naming the department involved, much-much-much less take issue with his sanity. These guys talk to each other and believe me there are plenty of gun dealers they can patronize. What you pay in taxes doesn't make a pimple on a rat's be.... well you know.

Anything else giving anyone else a bad day??? Now we all know that if the nice police officer pulled you over, there must have been a good reason. Thank goodness someone out there is keeping us all safe

Walk.... As in walk away and keep it moving. LEO's can and sometimes will be rude, many are not. You are easy to clock moving even if the car was in front. Was it right? No not really but as many will tell you. Ish happens, no ticket = no worries.

Guess the Silver Blurr Mod is working better than I thought!

Seriously,,,,throw me a pm,,,I know several NPD Officers as well!

HYW Patrol followed me for miles. Finally lit me up as I exited the freeway. I asked why he pulled me over. I stated I saw him following me for over 5 miles. His response was I must have been weaving in my own lane. Then proceeded to say he just wanted to see my car and ask if he could see under the hood.

Whether or not this guy really had you on beam or not - I cant say.
Have you changed tire sizes that would throw off your speedometer?
Just "suppose" an officer stopped someone at the start of his shift going 54 mph in a 35, or 40 or whatever. Is it possible to NOT clear that speed and pull over cars all day at that speed? If the driver questions it, the officer can show the person pulled over, his display that will clearly read 54.

Not probable BUT, is it possible?

Ok, couple things to think about on this. A coupls possibilites here.

1. As a cop, I can tell you a lot of officers have a pre determined warning/ticket speed. 14 is a ticket for most guys, however, he may have been pretty sure the speed was you but not positive so issued a warning. This happens when he he is in stationary, and there are a several cars in the area. he may think it is you he had a 54, but not be certain. etc.

2. How fast were you going prior to the intersection? Maybe the stop was not for the 44 you were doing there, but a speed you were doing previous to the red light. He may have had you on radar, then pulled out, saw the light change and was waiting for a good spot to pull you over (some are better than others for safety as cops don't like to get ran over). When the volkswagon stalled, it forced his hand to light up to change lanes and go get ya.

Now, couple of misconceptions out there.

1. to the trees/fan comment. Yes, radar can pick up the fans in the car. Signal is easy to hear (they give an audio tone), it is not a strong signal and highest I have ever got mine to read is 24. Trees? Never had a tree read. Sometimes in moving, it does get confused. If competent, it is easy to see the problem. You will get a high reading on a car and visually it won't look right. Most units when moving show patrol speed as well. With this error, it will show patrol speed very low. It is taking the miles from the patrol car that are missing and adding them to the suspect car. Happens because the radar uses a moving opject in front of it and thinks it is stationary. For example, it figures patrol speed from a signal bouncing off a semi that is going slow.

3. to the is is it possible but not probable to keep the speed locked question. In a short answer, yes. I could lock a speed, and just leave it on there I guess if I wanted. Most cops would not do stupid crap like that. However, for those that would,in most cities (im sure Norman is set up this way) the cars have cameras. I am always thinking about that camera, and even "act" for it on certian types of things that I know our judges like to see and case law supports. Camera in a patrol car can be my best frined and also my worst enemy. When there is not a camera, I still assume there is one. People are always taping us on car stops, and in the bar strip etc. We are always being monitored.

If I was to guess, I would bet this was a case were the Officer thought the vette was the one speeding, but wan't 100% so he just gave a warning.

In the 70's our department had Dodge squad cars and the fan motor for the heating/air conditioning would be picked up by the hand-held radar. The higher you turned up the fan, the faster the speed registered on the radar. I spent many summer and winter days sweating or freezing my butt off because I turned off the air conditioning or heater when I sat radar. Is it possible? Of course, but 99% of the police officers out there are honest, decent people who have to look at themselves in the mirror every morning. I never felt that writing any traffic ticket was worth lying about or compromising my integrity over. I also always asked the driver if they wanted to see the radar.
