Default 98 vet headlights won't turn off

I turn the switch and sometimes they go off and sometimes they don't. Sometimes they just turn on in the middle of the night.
Is it just I need a new switch?
I have no idea. Please help.
Thanks

A freinds 99 had the headlights coming on by themselves and it was the turn signal/headlight stalk.

Do you have Twilight Sentinel enabled? If so its worth turning it off to troubleshoot the problem as it can confuse the diagnosis.

With headlight doors up/lights on/switch off or doors down/lights off/switch on combinations, I would agree that it's probably the turn signal switch. The bulbs and the door motors are controlled through separate circuits but the switch is common. If both the door circuit and bulb circuit are working the switch is the most likely problem.

As I said, Twilight Sentinel can affect it. Check the Micro Relay 44 in the passenger footwell fuse panel. If it shorts out it could turn your lights on since power would be always on.

Many of the lighting functions run through the hazard switch but I still think it's the T/S switch so best concentrate of that first.

Take a look at this thread for advice on changing or refurbishing the switch:

Some of the posts later in the thread suggest that a replacement switch is the best solution as a repair may be temporary at best. As it only takes an hour to do the fix it's probably worth trying the repair first.

Heres the wiring diagram showing which wires control the circuit.

I agree as well that its probably the headlamp multifunction switch. You can repair it yourself if you're handy otherwise just buy a new one.
