Default Mirror

I have a nice 99 FRC. It is pretty "plain Jane" as per amenities. I installed an HUD and other minor improvements in the interior of the car. However, now I want to replace the original factory rear view mirror with a new mirror that has a compass and temperature display on the mirror. I have found those available on the net. Has anyone ever changed out their original mirror for an upgrade? How much trouble is it? I am sort of handy but not so much with electrical components. Most of the units I see have harness wires. Is this a project to take on by myself or do I have to take it to a shop?

Any suggestions and/or help will be appreciated.

I think you would have some wiring issues..if your 99 is like mine you have the basic 4 or 6 wire plug....are you talking about a mirror like the 02 and up have? I know they have many more wires ....does the site you are looking at provide any input as to what may be needed to do the swap?

I have looked at a lot of varying styles and applications. Some come with kits and some do not. Here is what I sort of had in mind. I will make some calls to manufacturers and distributors before I dive in head first.

I know a few of the C4 guys had installed one. IIRc though, the Gentex was recommended as a better replacement. Something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-50-GENK2...sories&vxp=mtr

Although I like the looks of the one you posted better. From what I know the hardest part would be to run the temp wires. But no harder than running wires for a stereo upgrade I wouldn't think.

If you do it let me know how it turns out, I may do the same thing.

Contact Dennis at Double D Mods - I think at one time he offered a new rear view mirror that had all the goodies (nav and bluetooth - didn't mention temp or compass) on it and it was pretty much a plug and play type of install. He might have something that has exactly what you want by now.

Also, forum member matthewlfd recently installed an autodimming mirror with compass on his car - bought the pieces from a salvage yard. I have a file on how he did this and if you'd like a copy, PM me your e-mail address. Or just contact him yourself or do a search for his posts.

Thanks to those of you who have given me some leads. I will be making some calls to see if I can do this myself. Once again, thanks for the info.

I will be happy to let you know if I have any success at adding the new mirror. My usual approach is to have the mind set that if some one else can get the job done, so can I. We'll see. Thanks for your input.
