Default Need more HP

Hi,

There is alot of forums about his topic, I just wanted to see what I can do for my 2001 AT4 vette. I want to add more HP. I am still working on going somewhere to do a proper tuning and then dyno. So before I do that I was womdering what simple quick/dirty mods that I can do to add couple more HP.

For example 160 themostat jsut came to my mind is that a useful add on.

Ok lets see what you all got for me. I am planningto install headers, x-pipe, exhaust to replace the stock. Its not going to happen before the tuning/dyno.

Thanks

I am sure plenty of folks that know a lot more than me will chime in but I would not even think about the tune until the headers and possibly a CAI were installed

Well I already have a Vararam installed and I am not doing the HHeader+exhaust till maybe next year. By then I think I could do another tune/dyno and see what the gains are.

So for now I just wanted to do simple add ons that could give me something

I never had mine tuned before I installed my headers, cat back & CAI. I do know people who have and their numbers were about 306 to 312 RWHP depending on the dyno.

With that said, after my installs and dyno I had 359 RWHP. Based on that I would say with CAI, headers, Cat back & tune you should see a gain of 45 - 50 HP depending on the tuner & the dyno used.

Not to deviate from the mod topic. If i just lets say update from the stock mufflers/cat eyes will i have problem later down the line to update the headers and to an xpipe or will my options be limited depending on what mufflers i get

Shouldn't, my first mod was a B&B cat back system and a Blackwing CAI. I didn't install my headers until about 8 months later. Everything bolted right up.

A friend of mine had a C5 automatic and with the tune it changed his shift points which made the car quicker. U should consider getting the tune last because you should get one anyway after the mods you plan on getting. The thermostat isn't gonna give you more HP...but will make the engine run a bit cooler which helps.

Tune last, mods first. Not worth tuning it beforehand unless you tune yourself.

So I gave it a thought and below is what I am considering. Let me know what you think. I already have the Vararam installed.

- C5Z06 Ti's muffler (used ofcourse, i am on a budget , arent we all, anyone have a clean set want to sell)
- 160 or 180 thermostat didnt decide on which one. I was told I need to program the fan (On/Off) when I do that mod, is that true. Or is it put on and drive
- X-pipe that goes with the C5Z06 Ti's (Any ideas what should I consider, there is alot out there)
- Replacing the stock MAF (which one??? , is it worth the $$$)
- Throttlebody Bypass (is this worth doing on my 2001)
- Tune (if I want to tune myself what do i use is that hard to do)
- Dyno

Let me know what you think. Comments are welcomed

Another thing I forgot to add to the list. I am going to replace the spark plugs and wires. I was thinking to go with Magnecor and the NGK TR55 Solid Copper Core plugs or NGK TR55VX plugs (platinum tipped)

As the thermostat goes either will be fine, just make sure to get the fans tuned it as well, So do that right before you leave to get it dyno.

- Replacing the stock MAF
- Throttlebody Bypass

These are useless and will do nothing. Do not waste your money. If you can afford it, I would do some XS headers since you are on a budget with an X-pipe.

Thanks for the info, that all helps. I rather spend the $$$ on value added mods

everything you are considering will NOT require a tune. You chasing good money after bad for no real performance gains. It's your money. If I were in your situation, I'd start with buying the basics, a decent set of headers, x pipe, and rear exhaust, delco plugs and red wires, vararam intake and then maybe a mail order tune from someone like ECS. There is no need for a dyno tune until you reach some serious hp adders like heads and/or cam. Again it's your money do as you see fit.

Nitrous! Cheapest, big, bang for the buck! Floor it, flip a switch, hold on! A true performance adder. All that other stuff is like spittin' in the wind. Go for it!

Don't tune tell after headers, as u will need the tune then. I would also go 160to on thermo but would do it just before the tune to change fan temps. Cooler is better, but if u don't donfans when u do thermostat ubwill

Sorry for crappy typing. Fat fingers on a cell phone. What I was saying is u will have too much of a temp. Range. Thermo and fans need to be same time. I am also another vote for XS headers. Come with x pipe for less cost than most and are of a really good quality. I am very happybwith mine.

Just get a blower. I went the "long way around" when I should have just went straight to forced induction and saved a lot of time and money. The car will never be fast enough with minor mods. The exhaust mods are a good "start" then you can go from there.

All these other "Snake Oil" mods (T-stat, TB bypass, CAI,...) are a huge waste of $$$.
