I have bought 3 gas caps in the past 2 years for my 2000 vette they seem not to want to tighten after a period of time the lastest was bought today at Chevy for 25 bucks, is this something that is common? I also hear air escaping from the filler pipe sometimes when I remove the cap to refuel, where would that be coming from and is that normal????
ok that could be just that I thought that someting wasn't venting correctly on the engine and that was causing my gas caps to go bad. thanks Vetteman Jack and also TR6speed If anyone else has thoughts please share I'm at wits end on this Gas cap thing
I have had two C5's and definately haven't had any trouble getting the gas cap to tighten. Like someone stated, I would be looking for problems with the filler neck.
What about the sound of escaping air when it is tight and I remove the gas cap?
That one is normal. Heat can cause it.on a hot summers day when you pull into the station the tank has mostly air in it which pressurized with heat.
Also the evaporative emissions system intentionally pressurizes the tank to prevent fuel from evaporating. If it's still got pressure when you open it that's a good thing. I think 99% of the time its just not enough to notice. I think the manual actually says to open the cap slowly due to pressure.
As for the cap not sealing...have the filler. Checked. And make sure you are getting it on there straight.

If the cap isn't tightening, and the OP has already changed it three times, it's time to look for something else being the root of the problem. There are only two parts that could possibly cause the problem, so if it isn't the gas cap, it's got to be the filler neck. Occam's razor.
I got the new cap and tried it useing my hand and the new one turned to the right with a lot of resistance before it started to click. the old one turned and clicked real easy without any resistance. So I feel like it was just a weak drag on the turning part or maybe I had always turned it to much , I don't know but it's sealing great now if this reoccurs then the Chevy dealer will have to explain. But going forward I want to thank all who have tried to point me in the right direction.
