Given that Corvette owners are usually on the mature side, it usually happens that when a fellow Vette owner gets into an accident, it is usually the other driver's fault. (Not all the time, I guess, but that is not the point)
We live in a country where distracted driving is everywhere, and sadly, surrounded by people who are out to "get" you for little thing although you are 100% not at fault, or people who will try to weasel out of a fault in case of an accident, even though it was clearly the other driver's fault.
So I got myself some silent witness, aka the dash cam. It is passive device and only records when I press the record button, or when it senses sudden change in acceleration. (braking, etc) I can also set it to record all the time if I want to. There is also a parking mode where it starts recording fragments if it senses motion.
I also got one for my daily driver. Nice way to protect your C5.
I have a trail cam, it even takes pictures in the dark with infrared. It's the size of a large paperback though, there must be some available cheap now. No movement sensor, just a motion sensor like a garage light.
Check out a British chap who goes by "techmoan" on YouTube. He tests all kinds of these gadgets.
Based on one of his reviews, I got this:
It was $192 shipped from Hong Kong. The price from Chinavasion has since gone down a bit. The build quality is excellent as is the video. I'm still experimenting with camera location/mounting in my car. I'm trying to figure out a way to mount it over the speedometer cowl so it can capture HUD info.
I intend to use it mostly to record HPDE and country road driving like on US route 8 here in NC.

I got this one in Japan. Market for dash cam is huge over there for consumers unlike in the USA. The size is about the size of a small beeper, fits in your pocket easily. Works with DC power, and saves data on SD card. Comes with all necessary hardware. No user interaction is necessary as you can set it to record continuously or only on triggers. On triggers, it will save 15 seconds before and after the trigger. Price was around 180 dollars. Very high quality. It is DC powered, so tapped it to the fuse box, so it turns on in RUN. No transformers or tacky power supply necessary.
I regretted not buying two when I was over there, so I went online to search for one for my DD. Only good one I found was made by Bulls I drive recorders. (Google them and you'll find it) The one I bought is small, and very inconspicuous, and doesn't look like a radar gun or a camcorder. Works at night, and video quality is great.
Don't buy those 30 dollar ones from Amazon, they are made in China and they suck. You get what you pay for.
If you youtube, you can find several clips from these devices. One I found funny was the driver deliberately backed up into a car with the dash cam, and the driver blamed it on the other car for rear ending him. The innocent driver pointed to the dash cam, told them that they are being recorded, and the instigators got in their cars and scurried off.
Good thing to have to protect you from false allegations.

I should also mention that the video overwrites the oldest one if it gets full, so no need to dump video data onto the computer if there is no need. Just hook the card up to the computer if you want to save the clips. (after an accident or interesting incident) Completely passive interaction free device.
Puzzling why there is no market for this thing in the US.

Simple, for a few dollars more get a decent usable camera such as a GoPro or other bullet cam on the market that does not overwrite data on the fly.
The model is B1500, from Bulls I drive recorders. (Note, it is not the one that is on the pic) It does not overwrite data on the fly, though, it will overwrite the oldest file when it gets full, kind of like an endless tape recorder. It also records 15 seconds prior and after the trigger (manual or automatic) so the whole incident will be saved on the memory card for viewing.
As for the Gopro comment, sure, if you have time (or the ability) to hit the record button when some DB is about to sideswipe you into a concrete barrier and then runs, I guess the Gopro will be more usable. Also hitting the record button on GoPro won't be useful after your car is mangled up on the concrete barrier.
Also you won't have to worry about "memory full" issues.

We could sure use a vendor to set up a group buy on these. They will certainly save your assets in the event of a he said - she said accident, or worse, a set up accident. After all, vette drivers are target risks for insurance fraudsters.

On the other hand...
If I were in an accident, and it was the other persons fault, and I saw this hanging from the visor,,,, I would alert the LEO the moment he arrived so he could put it in the report.
Then I would tell my insurance company that the other driver has a recording that proves he/she is at fault....
Haha. Well given that it doesn't look like a big camcorder or a book, I'm sure most people won't notice. Especially since it is sparsely used in the US, except for LEOs.
I bought one off e-bay for $35 that records in segments and will record over at the beginning when the card is full.
Video is great. Take it everywhere..
I'll see if I can look back and find the vendors name.
Found it quicker that I thought!!
dealers name is "happy-dealers"
$35 plus free shipping
I have bough 4 from him

Check out the chase cam it can be set up to record at a certain speed, acceleration, full time or at the press of a button and it has full hd ability and you can hook up four cameras at once to record on the same screen. Plus its not much bigger than a AA battery.
