Your trusted mechanic is wrong and just trying to profit off you. Ship it to ABSFixer, period. I had mine fixed that way, as have tons of others on this board. I have never heard of a complaint on a fix.
Now if you have an early C5, that is another story. I have yet to see an early ESBM fixed. Replacement seems to be the only way to go. And Chevrolet doesn't sell these, you need to find one in a junkyard.

S = Steering
W = Wheel
P = Position
S = Sensor
And yes this can but not always be the case. They are sensitive but it does happen and is worth a shot to look at.

Pulled the codes, got C1287, replaced the steering wheel position sensor and all good since then.

I believe the 1214 usually means the EBCM is failing. I would keep an eye on it and be ready to ship it off to ABSFixer. Clear the codes and drive the car hard once or twice (enough to trigger traction control) and see what happens.
