Hi,
I just bought a 2000 Vette and it was running great and starting every time. Yesterday it wouldn't start. Battery was a little corroded so replaced it with a new battery. Still won't start. All the lights come on in the dash board but won't crank at all, just acts like the battery is dead. Advise before I have it towed?
It's behind the fenderwell underneath the battery. The PCM (I believe this stands for powertrain control module) is your computer chip. I'm not very knowledgeable about it, but since you mentioned the corrosion on your battery that's a good place to start looking. You might check your fuses as well to make sure none are blown.
Oh ok, so I can figure out the code myself? I think I might have to have it towed but want to make sure it's nothing silly before I spend a ton of money.
The link I posted tells you how to pull the codes, It doesn't have the meanings of the codes. Post them here and let people with lists of codes and hands on experience with them tell you the meanings. Even the one sentence meanings of the codes in the code lists may not be adequate for you to understand them.
Lots of other things you can check as indicated by the other posts to this thread. The codes CAN help narrow down what to be looking for.
Ok, I'm not by the car right now but I will try this code check thing later and post the code. Its in a safe spot but I want to get it towed this week if I can't fix it with a trick.
Had the same problem with my 2000 vett last week. I could hear the solenoid click but acted like the battery did not have enough amps to start. I had a 8 year old battery so I replaced it, but it still would not start. I have long tube headers so I thought maybe the heat was affecting the solenoid. So I went ahead and replaced the original starter, still would not start. By the way the starter tested okay, but I went ahead and replaced since it was 12 years old. After looking at GM's wiring diagrams, the only thing between the ignition and the starter was the ant-thft relay. Replaced the anti-theft relay in the passenger side footwell compartment. It cost about $28. Solved the problem. There are two identical relays mounted under there. the one with the purple wire is the anti-theft relay. Try switching them first to see if the car will start. If it does than go ahead and get a replacement relay. By the way, I had no code errors. The OEM relay is #12177235. Hope this helps.

^^This first^^
Mine did it and it was the key cylinder. It was damaged and could not read the resistor. If you jump wires at the relay and it spins over, you have greatly narrowed down the problem.
My first step was to pull the relay and check it with two leads and the car battery. It clicked so I knew it was good. I could jump the wires at the relay and it would start. At that point I knew it was the key cylinder

In addition to what everybody else has posted about the key and ignition problems....
I had a similar issue with my 2000. My key was worn from being turned so many times and making the security light come on while driving. This was a poor connection/reading because of the wear on the key and one time it "locked" me out from starting the car for a about 5 minutes. I replaced the key with a new one and I have not had this happen since.
Check your key and make sure it's a tight fit in there and not worn and sloppy.

Interesting...I think I may just try that as a last thought. I will get a replacement key and try to start it. It is kind of loose. I did try both my keys. But I do use them both so maybe they are both worn.
Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
Press and hold "options" and
While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-second period.
Press "E/M" to exit.

Thank-you!

If you go the route of a new or spare key, here is where I picked up my extra one. This seller ships fast and is a great seller. You have to follow the directions listed in the auction so that you can tell him the correct VATS#.....
I am having a similar problem with mine 98 Vert. All the lights and radio come on, but the engine doesn't kick over. I have to lock and unlock the car a few times to get it to work. Usually after the 3 time....or 5-10 minutes sitting....it will start. I pulled all the codes and cleared them and tried again...Didn;t start and threw the code P 1631 H C which is "Theft Deterrent Password Incorrect". My guess is that it has to do with the resistors on the keys...as neither one consistantly starts the car.
