I just purchased a 2004 Coupe and went on our first road trip with the Mrs. Coming home we had a cooler in the back and found that everything melted (chocolate) and the cheeses were soft. we had two cooler packs in the cooler. Is this due to the hot sun, large hatchback window and the black cover over top of the cargo area or is it the proximity to the mufflers etc.? Looking for some advice here.
It's probably a combination of both. You can get a heat/sound insulation kit from Vettenuts that will help block the heat produced by the exhaust system and make your cabin a lot quieter.
My personal experience would tell me that it's solar heat coming from the back glass.
I keep a large soft well insulated bag of water in the back center pocket of the Z. It could not be any closer to the exhaust. I do not like ice cold water, so i don't use ice or ice packs. Even on extremely hot days the water is always at about room temperature where i prefer it.
One personal note that could be a variable is that I never cruise with windows down. Always up and A/C on about 74*
My car is tinted pretty dark and we have the black mesh thing (don't know what its called) that came with the car in place. We don't have any problem with our cooler or dog getting hot.
we travel with a soft cooler and ice packs and haven't run into that problem in very hot weather....we use the soft cooler because we can compress it and store it under the top when we remove it
I've got tinted windows and they are "limo" tints (very dark). And when I get out of work, the interior is in the 120's. The very large front window and large rear hatch give a large area of surface exposure.
Chocolates and cheeses? Probably should have taken the Caddie. Sorry, that's just wrong. Turn the A/C down and try again.
Hilarious.
I have to admit, I would have never expected this type of thread to make it to the corvetteforums. The sun / heat, do not go well together with chocolates and cheese.

Just made a 900 mile round trip to the coast. Had a spray container of glass cleaner in the center rear well with other items. The container was too hot to hold after a seven hour trip. A lot of heat is generated up from the chassis into the cabin and trunk areas.
Side note; the 03 Vert ran great@ 75 (limit) plus, gave me a solid 26 mpg, and the Passport worked like a charm. With the trunk area full of clothing and such, it really quieted down the road noise also.
^ I think most hatchback cars would give similar results. I don't see this with my ZO6 (with a trunk), since the sun isn't shining directly on my shtuff.
