has anyone done the real world math on how weight affects mpg? i know it's known that if you add or subtract weight it will alter your mpgs. but how much? are we talking 1 or 2 mpgs per 100lbs? 20lbs? just curious if anyone has actually done any real world testing.

Weight on a performance car (in my humble opinion) should only be considered in the affect of acceleration and handling. I think from my memory every 100 lbs would cut or improve quarter mile times by .1 seconds. If you are concerned about mpg get a KIA or equivalent.

Thanks for the help!

i meant to include 1/4 mile times as well, but forgot to add it in my original post.

oh, and if you're only interested in speed and handling, get an ariel atom or equivalent.

Dadaroo had it right. From a physics standpoint it takes power to get weight moving, the more weight and the faster you get it moving (acceleration) the more power required and thus more fuel. Once it is moving, it really doesn't take more power (or fuel) to keep it moving.except for friction, wind resistance (neither of which are much affected by weight) and going up and down hills (which, theoretically cancel out). Long story short... he was right.
