Default Help with Rims

Hey guys, first post... About to buy some new rims for my C5 and I just want to make sure that they'll fit right. I don't want to get in trouble by posting links, but it's ebay item # 290711679378 .. I'll attach the info at the bottom.

So what I need help with is:

1.) Are cheap rims safe? I'm familiar with "chinese parts on ebay", and don't want to use something that's going to crack and fall apart at 140mph.

2.) Will they fit right? I have a C5, and I'm not familiar with with the "offset" means. I'm guessing how far it sticks out from the car, I don't want it to look weird.

3.) Would it be okay to get something like Front = 18x8.5, Rear = 19x10? I'm planning on using these on another C5 later, so it'd be nice to have some wide tires for the rear.

4.) What tire sizes should I be using for those sized rims?

THANK YOU!

I am not an expert on wheels, but I do know that as far as fit goes, as long as you are ordering wheels designed for the C5 they will (or at least should) come with the correct offset. The wheel size you want is not a problem on your C5, there are many members that are running 18 front and 19 rear and some with 20's. As for the center cap, if what you are saying, is you want the use the center cap off your original wheels on the new wheels, then I would say I don't think they will fit. I have a set of C6 Z06 reproduction wheels on my'01 coupe and I have had no issues with them. When I ordered mine, I specified that I want blank center caps and then I ordered a set of C5 logo decals to put on them.
It is just a fact of life in today's world, that many of the products we get are coming from China. So I would think that if you are looking a reproduction wheels, that is where they will be coming from.
One last thing, welcome to the forum.

Guy has to sleep sometime.

Here is some info on wheel offsets posted by 8VETTE7 that might help you a bit, but hopefully someone with a lot more knowledge on wheels and tires will chime in on your specific questions. I do know the bolt pattern is correct for the C5.

Backspace/offset dimensions are as follows:

C5 (coupe/convertible):
Front 17x8.5", 58mm offset = 7.03" backspace
Rear 18x9.5" 65mm offset = 7.81" backspace

C5 Z06:
Front 17x9.5", 54mm offset = 7.38" backspace
Rear 18x10.5", 58mm offset = 8.03" backspace

C6 (coupe/convertible):
Front 18x8.5", 56mm offset = 7.45" backspace
Rear 19x10", 79mm offset = 8.61" backspace

C6 Z06:
Front 18x9.5", 50mm offset = 7.22" backspace
Rear 19x12", 59mm offset = 8.82" backspace

C5 and C6 wheel circle:

5 on 4.75" (120.65mm)

The overall diameter of the rear tires needs to be at least 1/2" larger than the fronts to avoid active handling/traction control issues.

Factory tire diameter delta rear to front is a little over 1". The 1/2" is the minimum delta before you start having active handling/traction control issues. Similarly over 1 1/2" may be too much delta. There is a range where things are safe and outside that range active handling/traction control may be on all the time or never come on when it’s needed.

And this info on offsets was posted by FYRARMS:

The lower the number is, the further out your wheels will be pushed. The higher the number is, the further in your wheels will be stuffed.

You should only be worried if the number is too high or if it is too low. All vehicles have a high and low offset range that will work, but that range also depends on the width of the wheel and the size of the tire (both width and height).

Good luck - hard to find a reproduction wheel these days that is not made in China.

Didn't take it as a jab at all - I do spend a lot of time here on the forum.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. It's been a while since I've been wanting a C5 (who doesn't want one?) so it's nice to finally have one, and be part of this community.

So it sounds like everything is checking out with these rims. Unless if someone comes here saying that these "chinese" ones are dangerous, I don't really have a problem.

But what's the sweet spot as far as rim size goes? How wide is okay for the rears? I just don't have a feel for the diffference between 19x9.5 and 19x10. I really want as wide as possible, without making it $500/tire later. After telling me exactly what wheel size to get...

What tire size should I be putting on that rim?

Thanks!

We do not sell reproduction wheels anymore due to quality issues.
You can get them from many forum vendors here who still sell them if you really want reproduction wheels. If you do decide to want reproduction wheels, check out JW at JW Motoring. If you do have any issues JW will take care of you and no headaches with dealing with ebay sellers

Ask Jerry(frumnuttin) how many of these cheap wheels we had to send him to get one replacement that would actually balance

I had way to many problems with those and the MRR I am sure Jack will agree with me on as well.
