Salvage titles really only mean something to corvette purist in this country. My families shop does all of the work for a large US Car rental company. They just brought in a 2012 Chrysler 300 v8 loaded that has close to 12k in front end damage. We just got the call that a shipper is picking it up and it's going to Dubai and the rental company got full msrp sticker for it. The company has a repair facility on a ship transporting vessel, and repair it fully while enroute, and when it arrives it is already sold and they know about the damage.
whole issue with these is getting off them again. most people will pay 60%, maybe 70% tops of going rate for a salvage car that has been repaired correctly
figure that's a 15k car with a clean title, maybe 16 tops and it's probably worth around 10-11k as it is
just too many other good deals out there
there was a 60k mile 2001 z06 that sold for just over 10k less than an hour from where i live that was a salvage title just recently. they can be good deals. you just pay less, sell less
I just sold my rebuilt title 03 z06 with 47k miles last week for 15k. I picked it up from an auction with little damage and fixed it myself. I didnt lose a dime in the deal and ended up making money. Heck i would never hesitate to buy a salvage title if it was fixed the right way. With that being said yes, 16k for that yr and mileage is wayyyyyy too much!
i agree with the other guys you can find a clean title for that amount...

Show me a 99 vert with 33,000 miles for 16,000. I've been looking for one 2 years. I bought my 99 Feb 2011 with 135,000 because I couldn't find one around here for less than 20,000. I've still been looking to maybe buy a low mile 2001 or newer vert, but don't want to spend 24/25,000 for a DD vert.

Go look at finished listings on ebay. A 99 vert with 30K and clean history is going to fetch near 20 grand. I read all these same comments when I was shoping. The only $12000-$13000 C5s I saw had 100k or more on the clock. Sure someone, somewhere may have got a super deal cause a seller had their back to the wall but that doesn't set the fair market price.
For value reference, our 2000 RED vert, 44K miles, one lady FL owned since new, garage kept, pristine, no issues (except the 130 PSI oil sensor and one headlight gear), was bought on Ebay for $17,350.
I'd do it again for the same condition car.
As noted, probably the best value indicator is the Completed Sales on Ebay. They tell the actual up-to-date values of these cars. Kelly Blue Book and others can't do that. Also look at the Reserve cars and the one's with high Buy-It-Now prices that have "0" bids. This is how we figured out our max bid price for our car (and how we sniped at the last 20 seconds...Good to have high-speed internet to get a high-speed Vette...)
I, personally, would not pay the full price for a salvage Title car. I'd always wonder about what was actually wrong with it and probably, so would someone down the line. You would have to provide full documentation to justify that it wasn't a flood car or one that did not bend itself around a tree. Salvage Titles can describe minor issues to major issues.
That's hilarious! They sell for more than 6 grand wrecked!
I was being a bit factious to make a point. It depends on the amount of damage. My son was looking at one at a local salvage yard and the price was $6500. Personally, I would not buy a salvage title anything.
