kpatz, why would you be making a $17k mistake... already have too many cars?
I already have a nice daily driver and my wife has a decent car as well. So that's 2 cars, in a driveway that only fits 2 cars. A 3rd car, especially one that can't be driven year round is a purely frivolous purchase. Besides, I don't have the time or money for another expensive hobby.
Some day I hope to move away from the northeast, to someplace nicer, and get into a house with a garage, and then maybe I can get a Vette.
The car is on consignment (as is everything at this dealer) so I don't know if or how much the price is negotiable. Any experience here? I suppose the owner has a minimum price in mind and the dealer acts as a middle-man (for a cut of the final price).
They buy and sell outright, as well as consignments. Only way to know for a particular car is to ask them.
I did ask and the car is on consignment. Having it checked by my shop and can negotiate from there. It's not like "I gotta have it"... I already have a '91 that I "want" to replace with something newer so if this deal doesn't work out I won't be heartbroken... there will be others.

Keep us posted on how it goes. If you don't take it I might be tempted to, though I'd rather have something in blue, like a Commemorative Edition.
Had the car checked and it will need brakes soon and tires are noisy and cupped. There's an odd rattle starting off in first, not mechanical, but a fairly loud buzz/rattle that doesn't appear in any other gear. Nothing obvious found. Could possibly be loose washers at the O2 sensors or the rear exhaust flanges that are cracked and leaking some soot (which need repair). Any ideas?
That is a fair asking price and it has a lot valuable options (both tops). It sounds like it checks out pretty good as well. I would offer $16,500 and ask for the service records. You can always raise your offer if necessary. Beware the EBCM's are unavailable and unrepairable on this model. It may never be a problem but if it is, it is a big problem.
They have a '99 pewter coupe as well, which they put new tires on, did you look at that one as well? They also have a mint black '04 Z06 but it'll need tires due to tire age and I don't know if they'd take $1500-2000 off the price to cover the cost of the tires.
So I've evaluated both vehicles, the 2000 by a mechanic and the 1999 close-up. Basically the 2000 concerns me because it appears not to have had the care I'd like. There are no service records, tires with about 50% tread are cupped and noisy, brakes have about 5K left and pulsate, oil was dirty, overfilled a 1/4 qt, with no evidence of an oil change sticker, needs a battery, and it has a nasty take-off rattle (which is considered normal but not something I feel comfortable with).
The 1999 actually looks in better condition with service records, new tires, recent drilled rotors, and I was considering that one instead (although I just hate the stock wheels... what was GM thinking?) until I realized that the whole nose is a different shade lighter than the rest of the car. Even if it was a minor accident, the paint match is horrible and something I would have to get repainted.
All in all, no winners here. I could probably live with either car for the right price, but as for being happy...
