Default B&M ripper shifter

I installed the B&M ripper shifter the other day and I have aligned it twice im still having trouble with smoothness while clicking into gears. Anyone else have this issue? I have read up on the antivenom mod and not sure if that's the way to go. If I could get it shifting smoothly first I'd like to do the mod after. Any suggestions?

When I installed my ripper I had the same trouble as you... I have just dealt with it but have been meaning to do the anti venom... One or two washers.. That is the question

If you do it please report back

I believe most (if not all) short throw shifters are 'notchy'. I installed my B&M shifter about two months after I drove her off the show room floor in 2000 and last year installed the antivenom mod - one washer. The shifting improved slightly, but it will never change the mechanical linkage. I'm still driving with the setup today. There are trade offs, and in this case I would rather have the B&M rather than the original shifter.

I used the B&M for 3 yrs with 2 washers. Throws were shorter and it did shift smoother with av mod. I upgraded to MGW but honestly, I couldn't tell it was that much better ($150 upgrade).

I have the B&M shifter, and combined with the Antivenom mod its just sweet !!!

People have to understand that going with a shorter shifter "WILL" increase the pressure needed to shift. Its just the physics of how it works. The Antivenom mod will help a LOT.

the short throw shifter and AV mod should be done together....

short throws don't help notchyness, they just make shorter more precise shifts....the anti venom mod is what makes the shifting smoother and less notchy...trying to get the shifting smoother before the anti venom mod is like waiting till your house is clean to call the cleaning lady ;-)...the mods sole purpose is to ease the notchyness.

if you do the anti venom without a short throw it will make the sloppy stock shifter more sloppy

if you put a tight short throw in it will excentuate the notchyness....both together is sublime motoring compared to stock

don't wait to try and get the shifting less notchy to do the AV mod, becuase the purpose of the av mod is to make it less notchy

that said, our cars are always going to be more notchy than some other cars, but with a short throw and the anti venom mod the notchyness does not impact the drivebilty and enjoyment of the car in aggressive driving

I have the MGW and two washers at the detent plug and love it...

I don't know the spec...but I put mine to about 35 ftlbs

the spec on the drain plugs is about 15 ftlbs, but the Detent sees movement and pressure so torqued it down pretty good...plus I wanted to make sure the copper washers got a good seal

I have no issues

one of the other guys will hopefully chime in on the torque spec

I tightened mine a little tighter than I normally would becuase the only M20 sized oil tight washers I could find were crush washers and I wanted to make sure they would crush all the way down to the size of the noncrush washers

as an aside...I alose changed my tranny fluid while I was at it.

I looked in the GM manuals I have when I wrote my procedure on my web site for the Anti Venom mod. I could not find it. Heck I could not find anything in the manual about the detent plug at all.

My suggestion is to make sure its tight enough not to come out, and not leak.... but not tight enough to damage the threads in the tranny.

That should clear things up huh ?

Have a 03Z with a ripper. Was flying down the freeway and this Porsche rolled up, we down shirted and I’m gone! I was far enough out I won, pushed the clutch in, it was still coming out of gear and anything over 5,200 has been. So 5th going to 4th all I had was neutral. Still have clutch pressure and can hear and see the linkage move but no action. The pin in the front you can see it appear and disappear as you move the shifter but has nothing but neutral. Has a texxarilla clutch kit and a stage 7 rpm trans with maybe 1k miles since she sits. Any ideas?
