been reading some threads in the c6 zo6 forum and noticed a lot of threads on motor failures due to in part from dropping valves. just wondering if the c5 zo6 motors are more durable, or do they also have there share of problems that would lead to engine failures, besides the spring issues.
Early C5Z's have had their fair share of issues (broken valve springs, oil consumption, etc). However, the LS7 seems to be the most fragile of all LS-based engines.

Stock LS6 engines that have never been opened or modified, are very very reliable.
When the engine is modified, or a radical tune is used, the reliability drops like a lead balloon.
actually the LS7s are also very reliable, just keep the shift points at 6-6200, not 6500 and keep the engine stock.

Many guys are automatically upgrading their valves when getting any top end work done.
Thats what I heard from a friend this weekend with a 06 Z06. The stock sodium filled valves are dropping. He says people are replacing with Stainless valves for more reliability. He is planning to do this change soon on his Z06.

Toque
SS valves do not have the RPM range as sodium filled.
SS are OK for up to 6200, but above, and 6500 to 7200 rpms the sodium filled and fresh springs are needed.
Glad the only LS6's that had Valve Spring problems were the 02 and 03's, Well not glad but glad it wasnt mine... The very very early 01 LS6 had a problem with ring flutter and allowing more oil to be used then normal, but that was at constent use in the high RPM range and was only on a few 01 Z06's in the early production months of the summer of 2000... Didnt cause any performance problems or engine problems, Just annoying because you would have to check your oil every once in a while to top it off a little... I have a 04/01 production model and have never had 1 problem EVER.... Its a beautiful thing
LS7 is a $13.5k motor. I don't know if they even sell LS6s anymore but I think they were going for ~4-4.5k. It would make me nervous outside of warranty.
The C7 Corvette will NOT be available in the ZR1 model when it debuts. GM admitted this during the 2012 C5, C6 Corvette Bash in Bowling Green at the National Corvette Museum that "the 2013 would be the last year for the ZR1 and they wanted to send it out with a bang."
Seeing all these catastrophic engine failures is really making me re-think adding a C6Z to the stable at some point down the line...
At least on the C5Z's with the valve springs it was mostly '02's and early '03's, and an inexpensive preventative fix...and sometimes nothing bad happened when the spring broke (some guys were lucky)...doesn't seem to be the case with the LS7...

Never EVER believe the manufacturers. Converts were supposed to have stopped many years ago......GM lost that law suit........Ford brought back the 5.0L, and better than before, the GT500 Shelby was supposed to be a 2 or 3 year production car........it's on the 7th year.
You'd be a fool to believe........it's money and if they can make it, they will.
