Just my opinion but Never wash down your engine bay. The C5's electrical components historically are very sensitive and with the generator and other major computer components not very well protected from water I just took my time and did a thorough detail. Mine wasn't quiet as dirty as the picture but was dirty none the less. I took off the fuel rail covers and used my air nozzle and blew out all the dirt and loose rock pebbles that love to collect in and around the bay. Once you do that select a product that cleans but doesn't leave a sticky residue for example, look for Adams or Mothers product. Spray directly onto a terry cloth applicator and go to it. It may take a few hours or days to accomplish the whole engine bay, but you want have to worry about any malfunctions due to water or soap getting into any components. Hey, again just my opinon but I haven't washed my car in two years. I get a kick when I go to the Corvettes at Carlisle show and their over there wasting time soaping down the car as I drive by. What do I use, a constant clean, wipe down with Spray and Wax everytime the car comes back from a drive. Ok, that's how I do it but every Corvette driver does it different. Good Luck!
FYI my favorite cleaner for the LS engine is Vinylex by Lexol. Its a vinyl/plastic/rubber cleaner/conditioner and brings a really nice clean shine back to the plastic covers and intake manifold and what have you. Try it out.
