1998 C5 168,000 miles. I have a squealing noise and it sounds like mid to rear of engine. Everything on front of engine has been replaced, even has the noise when all belts are off.I fear it's something bad and getting worse.
When does it make the noise? At idle? Does the engine idle relatively smoothly? If only shortly after startup, a leak in the secondary air injection system or maybe a partially stuck secondary air check valve could make noise, but only while the air pump is running.
Post codes, if any.
I wonder if a vacuum leak might have developed, making a sound that might sound like a squeal. Has the manifold been off recently?
If you don't have one, get an automotive stethescope at your auto parts store and see if you can pinpoint location.
Yes, the manifold has been off and the exhaust manifolds. I thought I was going to have to pull the engine to replace the Marmonic Balancer but as it turned out I didn;t have too. After I assembled the engine back togeather is when the squealing started. It seems to run smooth all the time and the noise comes and goes at different RPM's and speeds.
Like jim said, it is most likely a Vacuum leak then. Intakes will make a noise like that if they are not sealed correctly. Is it just the noise or is it running strange too? It should have hesitation if it is really bad..
Here is a good You Tube video on finding vacuum leaks. I would recommend using propane. You don't have to cut the torch, you and use a couple of different size hoses to mate up to the torch. I would still recommend having a fire extingusher handy, but it really is a very safe approach. If that does not identify a problem then is is quite possible you have an exhaust leak. That can be better found with an automotive stethescope to find your leak.
