Today I found a screw in the flat tread area of my Michelin run flat tire. Not being real familiar with this type of tire is there a problem with having the tire broken down and having a patch placed on the inside, then rebalanced?
I know I can just plug the hole but I think the patch is a better "fix" if I can have it done with no damage to the wheel.
I've had several tires patched on the inside with no issues. Motorcycles, trucks, cars, etc. Just sucks when you have new tires and find a screw in one.
The plug and patch combo's are the best. The plug portion of it seals the layers in the tread area with the patch portion is similar to a normal patch. It is important to seal the tread layers since without doing that moisture can get into that area and over time cause separation of tread.
that's strange. i found a screw in my driver's rear tire. it was on the shoulder of the tire and the tech said it could not be fixed. bummer too because they only have 10k on them. i got a new one pro-rated for mileage and i bought the hazard insurance so if it happens again i will get a new one free. americas tire company..

As the guys say, if its in the tread it can be patched up to 2 times.
That's what happened to me too. It went into the tread but into the sidewall on the inside. I've often wondered why a tire that's designed to run on its shoulder for 200 miles can't be plugged when its in the sidewall. Thats a real stiff sidewall on a runflat.
In last 2 yr I've had two screws in Goodyear runflat rear tire. Discount Tire fixed both times for free, said this tire was only allowed to be patched twice, 3rd time it had to be replaced. (which is fine I'm waiting for them to wear out anyway for new Mich.

Is there any reason why the 2 patch limit? I don't know why another patch makes a difference.
I have a GY F1 runflat that has 4 plug patches in it and is running fine, although the tread is getting worn to the point of needing replacement.

Same issue here, nail in the tread but according to the tire store too close to the edge to repair . I disagreed and repaired the tire myself. I bought the tires from an individual so no pro rating but for $300.00 for a pair of 295-35-18's I am still ok.
I patched my GYRF's twice with a plug from the outside. They ran perfectly with no loss of pressure until they wore out. I fixed them both with my car in the driveway and not on ramps or a jack. Simply pulled out the screws, roughed up the hole and forced in the sticky plug. returned the tire pressure to 30 psi and was good to go.
