I'll go the other way and say its a great deal if you can verify that the miles are "gentle" miles and normal wear items have been taken care of for that mileage. I bought an 03 with 99k for 16,000.00. It had a lot of the typical wear or concern items taken care of. New brakes, exhaust, suspension parts, AC redone, new radiator, grounds cleaned, new tires, an interior that looked like it had 1/3 the miles, it was owned by older guys who know hot to care for a car, and it was EXACTLY the car I wanted as far as color and options. I couldn't be happier.
I am sure when I'm done with it and it has well over 100k on the clock it will be hard to sell for a great price, but I didn't buy it because I'm foolish enough to think I'll make money on the deal ! Let's say I get 9k for it in 5 years for fun.....that would be like 1200.00 a year to drive a C5. Probably the cheapest car I've ever owned.
But....I am also not afraid to wrench on it. That can make a BIG difference with the older cars IMO.

Yeah, that's probably a problem. The car was sold at auction in Arizona, and picked up by the dealer in Colorado. I really doubt the maintenance history will be there, and no way to verify how the miles were done. I suppose if it was maintained at a dealer, I could have it looked up in a Chevy dealer's computer.

Maybe not. I understand that if the dealer didn't opt in for the "program" you can't get all the info. ( unless I was lied to) and it will only show warranty work done by a dealer anyway....could be many things done to the car that will not show on dealer records. I would pass on this one with no verifiable history. Otherwise I would say go for it...seriously.
Is there a way to contact the original owner ? Do you have his info ? That could be a big deal if he could tell you directly what the history is. It may be a diamond in the rough.

At the moment, no. If I go see the car it is possible the info is in the glove box, I've seen that before with other cars.
I would walk away from this one. Not because of the miles but because of the price. It may be worth low balling the dealer just to see how close to that 17k they want but i doubt they will come down to a reasonable price.
Like someone said above, if you think this is "The Car" then by all means go for it, otherwise there are plenty more out there to look at.
